Not too happy with the standard grease trap. I had a recent cook for a family event and the first batch of bacon filled it. Also when doing a deep clean it filled up too fast. Also, you can’t fold the shelf in if the trap has anything in it.
added an extension to allow the use of a bucket. I have an order in for bucket/liners that I can hang and change mid cook if necessary.
The homer bucket is just there while cleaning, not for grease while cooking.

Your mod is awesome, but instead of using liners I would look at a tin beer bucket with a lid. They can be found for under 20 bucks, some even with sports teams or beer logos. When it's close to full scoop it out into the firepit and enjoy the bacon smelling camp fire
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
Interesting mod - that said I’ve done 5 pounds of bacon at a time on my larger FTG900 and not filled the grease cup to overflowing - maybe it’s the bacon you used. I usually go with Wright’s if I buy it at the store. I use disposable liners and dunk them in a trash can next to the flattop. When cleaning you must be using a ton of water or something? Most of my water steams off as I scrub the top clean after or before use.
