Hi All,
I'm looking for an offset style smoker that allows charcoal use in the smoke chamber for grilling.
Like the Char-Griller Grand Champ or a something modified (by adding a charcoal ash pan in the smoke chamber).
I have a kettle and WSM that I love, but I'd like more grilling area and wouldn't mind having a fire box to play around with for smoking.
TIA
I don’t have an offset, but did have a Char-Griller Dual with a fire box for grilling and you could use the smoke chamber for grilling with the raising and lowering of the coals. While their longevity is limited, the gas grill was exceptional. Is the Char-Griller too small?

Pit Barrel Cooker
Weber Master-Touch
Blackstone Omnivore 4 Burner Griddle
Thermoworks: Signals, Billows, Thermopens, Thermopops, Nodes, bunch of silicone stuff, and more!
OnlyFire Rotisserie w/ Basket attachment for the Weber
Vortex for the Weber
Both of Meathead's books!
Way too many BBQ related accessories, tools, and doo-dads!
Welcome to the Pit. For a dual grill/smoker with a good surface area - A Hasty Bake. Roughly $1,500 and up. But if I was starting out again and buying equipment, that is what I would get. Built well and lasts years. It would easily replace the two 22" kettles and two WSM's I have. But I do have a soft spot for the Weber kettle.
If you’re wanting to grill in the cooking/smoke area, just about any offset smoker you get will allow that, with an ash tray/grate made for that purpose. There’s several out there but here’s a decent one I found for $99.

If you’re looking to stay in the less expensive zone of offsets, take a look at Oklahoma Joe’s smokers. They’re pretty decent for the price and will probably last longer than a Char Griller brand. Char Griller is pretty thin metal and usually leak a lot of smoke unless mods are made to it. If you’re looking for an adjustable height charcoal grate specifically, the Char Griller is gonna be one of your few options in a cheap offset. Good luck!
Thanks for all the replies! You guys read my mind about longevity and price point. I've seen the OK Joe mods (gasket, firebox insulation, chimney mod etc) and I would definitely do those. (I pimped the bejesus out of my kettle and wsm, so I'm ready.)
I've been on a quest for really clean smoke and I think a firebox is next for me.
I do a lot of direct/zone also which got me interested in using charcoal in the
smoke chamber to take advantage of all that grill space.
Thanks Panhead for the ash pan recommend and thanks to all.
P.S. Recently did some cherry smoked pork belly burnt ends in the WSM, white oak crispy chicken thighs in the kettle and everyone loved it. After all the raving, my wife said SHE WAS THINKING ABOUT BUYING ME A SMOKER!
Like bbq_esq said your budget really matters here. If you can spend 1-2k I’d be looking for a used good offset from LSG, Yoder, Workhorse, Pitts & Spitts, etc. No idea where you are, but someone was selling a beautiful LSG offset in the upper west here in the pit.
