After reading Panhead John hamburger review my want for a home charbroiler has been renewed. I just went on line to pick one out and was met with less than favorable reviews on several units. Just when I thought I had found a Vollrath unit that would work there’s a paragraph that states that installing it in a non commercial setting will void the warranty. That unit was 12 inches wide and 29 inches deep. I would go up to 24 inches wide if that’s necessary but 12 to 18 inches wide is perfect. I think I want more than 30,000 Btu also as that seems to be the least available. Do any of you with commercial kitchen experience have any idea where to look for what I’m after? It will be installed in my outdoor kitchen, sitting on a granite countertop top, with brick backsplash, and 12 foot ceilings above it. It needs to be convertible to LP gas but most I’ve looked at are. Last but not least I’d like to keep it under $1200. There are some pricey units out there

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
So, looking at those Vollrath charbroilers for sale at various restaurant supply places.... as well as some diagrams of what a charbroiler is.... I am wondering how is it really different from a gas grill? Sure seems like an open top gas grill, with burner tubes, deflectors over those tubes, and cast iron cooking grates...

captainlee I was about to say yes I can order one on line but the last place I looked said they only ship to commercial locations and will not ship to a residence.

You might want to look for a store that sells used restaurant equipment.

captainlee I like the way you think! Where there’s a will there’s a way.

The Vollrath unit probably has an AGA\UL approval for commercial kitchens. Area well ventilated, fire protection system in the exhaust hood and not near combustible areas. This would be more of a liability issue. Also the unit wouldn't have any child safe controls or cool areas to the touch, it's made for a commercial kitchen. That said, since you are using it outdoors there shouldn't be any issues as long as you use common sense as to where you put it and who uses it. I wouldn't worry about a warranty, only a gas valve there.
