    Desert Island, or End-Of-World Cooker?

If life as we know it changes tomorrow -- no electricity, no source of bagged wood pellets, no source of bagged charcoal, no propane tank refills, etc -- which cooker would you wish you had, or which cooker would you be glad you do have?

For me, my stickburner. I might have to use a handsaw (or my battery Ryobi chainsaw until it dies) to fell a tree or two and hack it up, but thankfully I have some on my [very small] property that, with some work, I could cook with in the event of an Armageddon-type scenario. Assuming I have food to even cook, since assuming in an end-of-what-we-know scenario there may not be any functioning grocery stores.

Bleak, yes, but what do we truly know about our future?

What about you? What do you have for such an event, or what do you think you'd like to have? No wrong answers.

I'm thinking either a cinderblock pit, or an old school smokehouse. Maybe a manual spit style rotisserie or a Argentinian grill. I have cooked many a meal using a sharpened sassafras stick and a campfire though, lol.

Great choices. I assume you have access to wood, and cutting said wood?

You got too much time on your hands Aaron. 😂😂😂

But I would have to agree. I’ll take my LSG stick burner for it’s durability and you can sure cook just about anything on it.

Sometimes I pretend I do. Other times I wish I did.

Well, if there was such a situation i guess I'd want one of those high end fancy full of doodads made of quality stainless steel Argentine style cookers. While smoking something enclosed while you're hunting or whatever might be really helpful, a bears gonna get what a bear wants so might as well have lots of versatility.

That's true. With a dwindling supply of humans the bears will be forced to tap into our cookers for some chow.

You're going to need food to put on the stick burner. I'll have an ample supply of venison, so an open fire with a fabricated rotisserie will do me fine. I'm a mountain man, Jeremiah Johnson in my last life.

I’ve got gotta go with my stick burner, too. I would wish that it was a newer one, but the medium-ish size of the one I have would be nice given that it wouldn’t take as much fuel to run. That said, where I was in SERE (Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape) school in the military, my team scoured the woods near our hide site and found a completely rusted out 55 gallon drum that we turned into a makeshift “grill.” Worked out pretty damn good!! We also learned how to make an in ground jerky “smoker” that we made rabbit and chicken jerky in for our evasion portion. I may have some pictures someplace. If I find them I’ll share them.

EDIT: Found one of the pictures of the “good side” of our grill.

I am close to a river for water, many many trees around and i have axes and saws a plenty. my trusty ferro rod would start fires in my dually truck rim that an 18" weber grate fits nicely in. If i conserve the ammo, should be able to eat well indefinately. Hope the bear swings by for a peak, then Bang.
      Edit, added pic.

You are speaking my language here. I have two fire pits and enough wood to last a long time. But to have a stick burner would be the best answer for sure. As others have said having food to cook is the question. Venison is surely going to be the option for those who can hunt, but the problem is that everyone else will be hunting too. Back in the days of the depression history tells us that there was no wild game left.

      Great thread, makes you think.

The good news, in my opinion, is that most will only hunt large game and will turn their noses up at small game that most, not all, would never consider. Squirrel, raccoon, opossum, bobcat, etc.

I’m doomed. I don’t hunt or fish. I don’t own guns. In fact in my 68 years I have never touched a gun. I did a little fishing a a young boy. Maybe I could remember how to do that.

But who knows? In times of real need, people can sometimes do amazing things. Oh I would do my best that’s for sure. 🤷‍♂️

I'd build a cinder block pit that I could grill or smoke on. Plenty of wood already cut and split, and lots more trees around that I can cut.

I’d just take my PK300 and build my own burn barrel for charcoal.

I would like to have a stick-burner but I figure this rig would get me through it. Plenty of wood here and the water is just down the hill.
