    Need a new smoker

My old Masterbuilt has a busted leg and has always had temp issues in cold weather.

what is a good upright smoker for cold weather?

Do you wanna stick with gas, or are you open to charcoal smokers?

      You left out Pellet Smokers
For example: Pit Boss 5-Series Wood Pellet Vertical Smoker, 1,541 sq. in., Copper, 5 Grids, 150-450 Degree Temp Range

Although more $$, I have a Lone Star Grills insulated cabinet smoker. It runs on charcoal and wood chunks and produces excellent results. And it will standup to the Nebraska winters.

Overall Dimensions: 34" width x 31" depth x 62" tall Interior and exterior constructed from 11ga steel with 2000 degree insulation sandwiched in-between Cook Chamber Dimensions: 28" x 27" Product Details: 4 nickel-plated NSF approved wire sliding/pull-out food grates (6.75" clearance between racks) Fully flanged and ga

I've had Masterbuilt for years. I built a wind break out of plywood that I place around it in cold weather. Seems to help

I did a brisket overnight at -4° in my BGE. It just shrugs off the cold like that.

        Smoke Vault by Camp Chef.

Many gas smokers have limited range and can't get down and hold low and slow temps. We tested this model and gave it our Platinum Medal.

How to make it work in cold weather

Cabinet wise, I think it is really a choice of fuel and what size smoker you are looking to obtain.

          Pellet:

          Temperature controlled charcoal:

Masterbuilt’s 40-inch Digital Charcoal Smoker marries technology, convenience, and affordability without sacrificing authentic flavor.

          Gas:

Many gas smokers have limited range and can't get down and hold low and slow temps. We tested this model and gave it our Platinum Medal.

          Higher-quality charcoal option but smaller:

Wherever BBQ teams are competing, it's a good bet you'll find Backwoods Smokers. We reviewed Chubby and gave it our Gold Medal Award.

The above link is to a pricy one but Backwards has cheaper sizes on its website that allow for more apples to apples comps to the above.

Backwoods Smokers are Professional Level cookers that are easy enough for a beginner to use. Using a patented double wall construction, we have put high quality insulation into every cooker, which gives you superior heat control in your pit while allowing the outside of the cooker to stay cool.

jfmorris I am a little surprised the Backwards smokers don’t get more love here but I guess folks go straight to LSG for higher-end cabinets. I had a former co-worker who loved his Backwards.

I think I would love one of the Backwoods G2 or G3 smokers - just not something that is on my radar or budget at the moment, unfortunately.
