My old gasser which has plenty of miles under its belt has a crossover tube that I noticed has in the past month or two rusted/disintegrated to the point where a good portion of it has become a "feeding trough" shape as opposed to the original fenestrated cylinder that it once was. I have ordered a replacement. My question is, does anyone think it is a safety risk to use it before I replace the faulty part?

I think I would plug it up with some foil or something, just to keep gas leakage to a minimum, and light the burners with a long butane lighter until the replacement part comes in.
That happened on my old Genesis and for years before replacing the burners I had to light the back burner with a lighter, as only the front would light using the push button. I was able to shove the lighter through the grate and between flavorizer bars to do it.

My question is, how long has it been like that & have you had a problem with it, cuz it’s only going to be a short time before you get the replacement.

DrJimmy2112 when you replace the crossover tube in those older Genesis grills, be sure to put the slots that the flame runs on facing to the SIDE, towards the center of the grill, and not facing UP. I made that mistake before, and it allows crud from what you are cooking to fall onto the slots and clog up the burner. The slots are supposed to face to the side, lining up with the gas holes in the side of the Genesis burners. That keeps them rotated so crud doesn't build up in them.
Sorry if this is just stating the obvious, but I got it wrong at least one time when replacing crossover tubes on the 2002 Genesis.

jfmorris that is a good thought...I have to look but I think mine has a flattened section that slides under the inner aspect of the firebox in such a way that the slots face up...It's cold dark and raining or I would go look now. Will update here

DrJimmy2112 the crossover tubes in mine were round, and could be rotated.

Did the foil repair before thanksgiving cook. Min was able to rotate as you describe jfmorris - thank you for the tip. Waiting for the replacement part.
Spatchcock turkey with a smoke tube turned out pretty good

Glad to help! Glad your cook came out good! My old two burner Genesis was not good for setting up an indirect zone just using the burners, so I would often remove the grates, and put down heavy duty foil or a low profile pan on top of the flavorizer bars, then put the grates back. It acted as a heat deflector under the ham or turkey, somewhat like the heat deflector or plate setter in a kamado grill. Helped make the 2 burner Genesis more "oven like" anyway....
