Weber Grill Thermometer Question

I'm having a bit of trouble getting a clear answer from Weber on this question, so I'll ask the real pros on AR:

My Weber Genesis Silver gasser has a broken thermometer--reads 400-ish °F when stone cold. I think (not sure) it broke when I got the grill very hot to cook a pizza--according to my IR thermometer, the pizza stone was about 625°F. I want to repeat this pizza cooking, but I also don't want to toast a new thermometer again. So, I am wondering if anyone out there does heat their Weber very high and, if so, does that toast the thermometer? And, beyond that, is 600°F maybe bad in other ways for the grill?

Yes, I know these thermometers aren't that accurate, but I have mine "calibrated" so that when it reads about 400°F, I know the temp is good for rotisserie, which I do often. Other times, I just ignore the thermometer.

I've had my my year-old Genesis up to nearly 700 deg. F a few times with no thermometer problems ... not that I pay much attention to what the built-in thermometer says.

Thanks! Yeah, mostly the thermometer is irrelevant, 'ceptin for knowing my rotisserie range and just a general heads up that it has warmed up. A replacement is just $7--precision instrument, you know. LOL

What Mbmorgan said, I've pegged the thermometer on the Genesis and it still works. Just call Weber CS and tell them your thermometer broke, they'll probably send you a new one free if you're polite.

Thanks! The 3" diameter is WAY too big to fit my grill, but the 1,000°F claimed limit is encouraging. I've order a new one from Weber for < $7 and will use it. Like others here, the built in thermometer is mostly not used anyway.

When I turn on all the burners to high on my Weber Summit 6 burner gasser, the built-in thermometer pegs to over 900 F. (this is what the manual says to do for "self-cleaning"). Like most others here, I don't use the built-in thermo for much other than to monitor temp stability, so I don't know what is the actual temp. But it is certainly very, very hot. But the thermometer has always recovered when the grill cools after I turn off the gas. Sounds like you need a replacement!

Does the dial read to 900°F or are you extrapolating?

Sorry - that was a typo. Should have said over 700 F. The thermometer's top end is supposedly 750 F. The gauge is
well past the top end. Who knows how far off the calibration is at the temp, but I would guess the real temp is well over
700 F.

theroc No need to apologize--my thermometer only reads to 550°F. Not sure if that's significant or not.

I've got two silvers and pegged them many times on warp 10. They have always gone back down. Maybe you got it to 1000 and it is just in the "see my record mode". Anyways, take it off and do a calibration test with ice and boiling water and see it corrects itself. If not take a hammer and bang on it (what would it hurt). Seems like the coil stuck or broke. If ya do get a new one after the "hammer" test make sure it goes to a higher temp. (I had to go outside and check mine. First time in a long time that I looked at them).

I'll give it a try--thanks.

The IR reported 786 on the Genesis Sliver B with all 3 burners on high. I was recording the temp across the GrillGrates. The gasser only sees quick - hot and larger grate area needed types of cooks.

Almost all the real cooking gets done on the Kettle / SnS / Mavericks, though.
