Weber LP Tank Level Gauge

I have a Weber Genesis Gasser. Does anyone have a LP Tank Level Gauge? There are several for sale. Do they work in cold Minnesota weather? Are they worth it? Opinions please.

Skip, I bought this one 4 years ago and like it. It still works well and has been pretty accurate for me….$17. I use it for the tank on my griddle. I can’t say how it works in very cold temps.

Edited to add: I definitely think they’re worth it. Without one you have to remove the tank and wiggle it around to try and get a rough estimate of how much you think is left. Too much of a hassle. Many years ago when I had a gas grill I bought one of those adhesive stickers you place on the tank, it had a color graph on it. As the tank got lower it was supposed to change shades of color on the sticker……it was junk.

I bought the same one for the Blackstone, so far its working well. Can't talk to Minnesota cold, though.

The problem you will have with a gauge that measures the pressure in the tank is that ambient temp affects the reading. I think this is the one I have, and it has readings for hot, cool, and cold days.

I have tank gauges on all my tanks, and they came with them when I bought the empty tanks at Costco years ago. They are a good ballpark to look at, and I like having them. The only grill with a built in measurement system is the Weber Genesis, with its hanging scale they've used for decades.

RonB has a good point that temperature affects the scale some, and it will show higher at higher temperatures. My CO2 regulator does that in the garage, with higher tank pressure in summer than in winter. I would get that scale Ron shows with the different temp ranges.

I tried the in-line tank gauges and found that the readings varied. The gauge would indicate that the tank was close to empty but when I weighed the tank it was 75% full. Earlier this year I bought a propane scale from Flame King. I thought I read an article from Meathead on the subject but I couldn't find it to repost. Anyway, here's the Amazon link:

It worked when I could find it, but now I just pick up the tank and guess. We have several tanks and they are never left hooked up to anything when not being used.

Anyway, its independent of temperature and the manufacturer used an average of 17.5 pounds as tare for an empty tank
