I am looking into getting a Weber gasser. I haven't decided new or used yet. Has anyone switched out their cast iron grates or coated style with stainless? I prefer stainless when I can. Cast iron is a rust monster where I live.

I have a 2019 Genesis II 4 burner with the cast iron grates, and as long as I use it a few times a year and oil the grates when I do, they seem to stay rust free. The times I swapped them for my Grillgrate panels and left the cast iron ones under the grill on a shelf, I had some rust develop. Now I keep them in the grill and they do better.
I had to get my stainless warming rack replaced under warranty due to rust, and believe it was due to heat damage to whatever grade of stainless they used for that grate. I had a grease fire that melted a couple of aluminum Grillgrate panels several years ago, and I think that same heat may have damaged the stainless, as it went rusty after that. Weber replaced it under warranty, along with burned out flavorizer bars, a couple of weeks ago.
I have to think the stainless grates would be nice to have. I don't have issues with the cast iron grates myself, and the coated cast iron on my old 2002 Weber Genesis is still working just fine in my daughter's backyard.

My old 2009 Genesis came with cast iron grates and I went to GrillGrates in 2016 and never have used the cast iron ones since.

I kept the cast iron ones on the shelf under the grill, so that I could use them for things like my cast iron skillet or dutch oven. You are not supposed to set cast iron cookware on top of Grillgrates, as the difference in the way the aluminum and cast iron heat/cool can damage the Grillgrate panels.
After the grease fire UNDER the Grillgrate panels damaged my 1-2 year old Genesis gas grill, and melted 2 of the aluminum panels, I kinda backed off keeping a full replacement set on the grill.
