After reading Meathead's article about covering your grill I'm less confident that I want to cover my grill. It's a Weber Spirit ES310. I live in southeast Gerogia so it's almost always humid. Would covering the grill shorten it's life by keeping the humidity in or would it be better to leave it covered to protect it from bugs, etc...? I grill year round.

tugboat I live in Indiana, a place not exactly known for good weather. Sometimes I cover my Weber (Summit) gasser but most of the time, I don't, even through the winter when snow can pile up on it. I've not had any problems of reliability with leaving it uncovered. It's just easier to use it when I don't have to fool around taking the cover off. Like you, I like to grill year round.

I cover my kettle unless it starts raining when the grill is still hot, then it's already wet so I leave it to get a rinse down. I never cover my big offset. I used to but I found when removing the cover there'd be wet spots & condensation on it for who knows how long. I figure rain won't hurt it and the sun and wind will dry it faster with no cover than with.

*Kamado Joe "Classic Joe"*
*Weber Spirit (for quick weeknight cooks)*
*Cyber Q Wi-Fi temp controller for overnight cooks*
*ThermaPen Instant* *Thermapen Chef Alarm* ...and pretty much any wheat beer!
I have the same Weber Spirit - I covered it for the first year but then dropped that habit after reading Meathead's article. So far it is handling the wet PA weather just fine. I cover the grills before I leave for vacation or if we are having (non grilling) parties - really just for looks.

I have had the same Weber Kettle for so long that neither my wife or I can remember where it came from or when we bought it. I have never covered it. It looks almost new with no rust or real wear to speak of. Now, I live in SoCal so we do have some pretty consistent dry weather. BUt it has sat through plenty of rain storms and a inclement weather and doesn't seemed fazed.
I do agree with Meatheads recommendation on keeping your grills in the garage if you can. This xmas eve my Offsets fire box burned out yet again, and just after a rebuild! So that thing is going to be put out to pasture, tired of messing with it when a Slow n Sear does a much better job for the $$. I am using my xmas $$ to buy a new larger Kettle, clear out a area for grilling in my driveway, and make room in the garage to store my Kettles there when not in use.

I covered my Weber Spirit after last years Thanksgiving turkey cook, and when I opened it up a couple of damp weeks later, it was covered in mold. Yuck. I haven't covered it since, and its been fine. Although I probably should have cleaned it more thoroughly after cooking that turkey!

Cookers:
Large Big Green Egg with a Ceramic Grill Store rack system, and the SnS setup.
Weber Genesis SA-E-330 LP INDIGO with SS Grates, Weber Crafted frame kit, baking stone, griddle (2/3), all from Ace Hardware.
For the first time in a long time I have no kettles as I gave them all away.
Everything Else:
SnS #3 with certificate. I was their first customer.
Sous Vide equipment.
SnS and Thermoworks instant read and leave-in thermometers.
Grill Grates for BGE.
Kingsford Blue Bag, Weber lighter cubes, Weber charcoal chimneys.
Rubs with salt: Meat Church Holy Cow.
Rubs without salt: Home-mixed versions of previously sold SnS Grills Rocky's Rub and Not Just for Beef using their recipe. SPOG.
Spices: Lots of 'em.

I have a 22" Basic and I think i am just going to go with another 22" but the Premium. I would love a 26' but they are so damn spendy! Rather just get another 22", another SnS and have 2 boss smokers. If I am going to spend $300" I am just going to get a PBC!Originally posted by fuzzydaddy View Post
26" or the ranch kettle? I'm sure it's the 26" since you've ordered a SnS...just had to ask as I don't know anyone with the ranch and I've never seen one in person!

I think that the quality of the cover is important. Here's a link to the page in which MH makes some helpful comments about grill covers:
FWIW I bought the Classic Accessories Veranda cover for my Weber Genesis earlier this year and couldn't be happier. It's well ventilated and priced right. Admittedly, here in Colorado moisture is only a problem when frozen and piled a few feet deep in the driveway ... but the recommended cover is worth considering wherever you live ...

Dances with lemmings
(and smokes on a Yoder 640, raises bees and shoots a .408 WIndrunner) "come la notte i furti miei seconda"
I cover my Weber 26 and the Yoder 640, both of who live on the back porch in plain sight of the residents (one in particular) who do not complain about anything I buy as long as I keep it looking presentable. If it shaves a few years off their lives, so be it. At least they won't complain when I replace/upgrade.
