Weber Grill Spirit II-E210 - Does it get hot enough to sear?

Happy New Year Folks! - sorry for being tardy on that....

This is on CL NiB for $ 290.00 - and CL is for hagglin'! I guess someone didn't want this for christmas and has also, curiously, avoided the more cookers syndrome.

Would this double as a sear king? I know how hot it SAYS it gets - my goal is to hear from someone that knows from experience. Thanks in advance.

(I don't need suggestions for an alternative - this is just an opportunity. I have six cookers in rotation - all Man makes Fire except for a Blackstone.)

I bought one from Craigslist that had been used 3 times for $100. I put grillgrates on it. Yes, it can sear.

My experience was that it topped out about 450-500 and would take quite a while to get a good sear on a steak. I wanted hotter for reverse searing steaks after smoking on pellet grills, so sold it pretty quick. Maybe something was wrong with the one I had, I bought it cheap during fall clearances, so rather than hassle with it, I sold it the next spring and got my money back.

Attjack ‘s post showed up after I clicked save, so I’ll add I never tried GrillGrates on the one I had, That would obviously make a difference on this grill.

Lipstick on a pig? It probably helps, but maybe a cost I don't want to add.

JGo37 I totally agree, I want a cooker than can sear without them, if I choose to use them for other reasons, fine, but don’t want to be forced to use them.

    Not in my experience.

      Do you use Grillgrates?

I should say say that I've never used mine to sear steaks. I use my sear burner or charcoal. If my Spirit wasn't at the cabin I would go test it. My guess is with Grillgrates and 15 minutes it'll get between 600 and 700 degrees at the surface of the aluminum.

My brother in law has that grill and I tried making steaks on it last season. To Andrade your question, no, it doesn't get hot enough on its own for a proper sear. But he didn't have grill grates, which could make a big difference

My old Weber gasser with GrillGrates seems to sear pretty well, I just have to get it up to Warp 10 as Meathead says.

I have that Weber E210 Gasser, last evening i used my grill grates to sear off a small Tri Tip roast. Without the grill grates, no way. Its a good grill for quick burgers or hot dogs, but gutless as far as high BTU.

Any reason you didn't use the flat side for the sear? I find that gets me the best results. The hatch marks do look good though.

I reversed seared this tri tip, so i did not even have the burner running on the flat side. I warmed up the tri tip to 115, then dropped it over on the ribbed side that was at about 400 degrees till the meat was at 130 ish

Was watching a you tube video the other day. Not sure which one. Maybe Sam the Cooking Guy? I believe that he said when using a gas grill to sear something do not close the cover or it won't form a crust. My grill is put away for the winter or I would have tried it. If anyone does try it and it works please ket me know.

If it was Sam, he cooks on a different class of equipment most of us will never have. He has two $5000 grills in the small space he films in with that gasser and EVO. I would hope that the BTUs are much higher and the burners something more special. Most gas grills, especially these little 2 burner Spirits, don’t keep enough heat with the lid open. I do buy into the theory though, especially when you want to sear with minimal additional cooking past the surface of the steak.
