    New Gasser Recommendation Help!!

I need some help finding a new gasser for my old man. He's awesome on the grill. Always has been. And somehow seems to get 10-12 years out of mid-tier charbroils, using them non-stop.

Well, he's finally about burned through the box on his current one.
    His requirements -
    1) needs to be propane
    2) would prefer an IR sear burner. Never uses the traditional side burner.
    3) most importantly - the GrillGrates I bought for him, need to fit on the new grill.

That's where I'm having trouble. I can find the surface area of grills, but it's hard to dig through and get the grill dimensions.
The GrillGrates he has are (measured by my mother.... so maybe put a small error bar on these) 5 1/4" x 17 1/2". It took 6 of them, for his 4 burner grill.

He doesn't need all of that real estate, but whatever it is, needs to be 17 1/2" inches deep to fit the grates.

He says he's on a $1200 - $1500 budget, but 1) this is honestly the last grill he'll buy and 2) my mom would spend about double that.

SO..... any of y'all already have grills that fit grillgrates that size? Or know a good way to get actually grill dimensions?

I've already emailed GrillGrates customer service to see if they had a list. We'll see.

Just a couple thoughts on those grates:

    1. A local metal shop should be able to cut them down a bit if your Dad finds a perfect smaller grill than they would fit.
    2. A new set of GrillGrates would likely be a whole lot cheaper than a poor grill choice that just happens to be the right size.
    3. To find grate dimensions for a new grill, look at the specs for grill grates as replacement parts rather than at the overall dimensions of the gasser itself. I know that Weber (and likely many others) post exact measurements for replacement grates so that you (and they) don't get stuck exchanging parts that don't fit.

I second what MBMorgan says about not letting use of an old set of Grillgrate panels keeping him from buying the right grill. If you shop for their blemish/seconds sale items you can often get them for less than half price as well.

I am a big Weber fan, but they don't have IR sear burners - the sear burner is just an extra burner between two of the others, to increase heat for searing. That said, if he is using Grillgrate panels, I don't see how he benefits from an IR sear burner. Grillgrates would block the heat from the IR burner, and Grillgrates kind of ARE an IR emitter once they heat up.

I will say that in looking at grills, it seems a lot of the newer grills are a couple of inches deeper than the grills were a few years ago. I see what you mean though as not many of them put the grate dimensions online - just the square inches of the grate. Maybe a trip to Lowes and Home Depot, or Ace Hardware, with a measuring tape is in order?

I know my 2019 Genesis has grates that are a couple of inches deeper than my 2002 Genesis. I had a full custom set of Grillgrates for both though, so reuse wasn't an issue.

If nothing else, I can go buy a new tape measure. Can't have too many.

I'm with MBMorgan on this - I'd shop for the grill on its own merits and if the GrillGrates fit, then that's an added bonus. If they do not fit, you probably wouldn't have any problem selling the current set and then putting that money towards a new set made for his new grill. I'll second the recommendation on the Genesis grill - I got mine 3 years ago and I'm still amazed at the difference between cooking on that vs. the mid-range grills I used to buy. If you end up with a Genesis, I'd definitely recommend getting one that comes with the upgraded grates (9mm vs 7mm) and some the new ones come with the Weber Crafted frame and kit, which I haven't used but looks awesome. Definitely check out Ace - they normally have a lot of 'special edition' grills that HD and Lowes do not carry.

Oh, that would DEFINITELY be the sensible way to approach the issue. My father is very pragmatic 98% of the time.... but not on this.

Fortunately, I had them recheck the dimenstions of the grill grates. The two most common are 17.5 in and 17.375 inches - according to GrillGrates cust service.
They said they have a list of Webers that will fit those dimensions, and Broil Kings will as well.
So I'll have a short list.... but DAMN, Broil King has gotten proud of themselves since I bought mine

I agree with everyone else. Find the grill he likes and if the grates fit, it is a plus.

Has he considered a Napoleon? I really like my Prestige Pro and this Rogue seems to be right in his price range.

Add my voice to sinking the cost of the previous Grill Grates and just fold in the cost of a new set as part of this new purchase. You should be able to get one heck of a lot of gas grill along with GGs to match for that kind of budget. Good luck!

Troutman - I don't think BFlynn mentioned an IR side burner, just an IR burner.

            2) would prefer an IR sear burner. Never uses the traditional side burner.

I guess you could interpret that a couple of ways. The Napoleon I mention below has both.

I didn't say side burner, but that's what I meant. All the words don't always make it from between my ears, onto the screen.

I'd look at Napoleon or Blaze.(although probably out of price range)

Napoleon Phantom Rouge SE 425 at about $1,250

What do you grill on, Troutman? Or do you even fool with gassers?

BFlynn I have a Weber Summit gasser I've had since 2015. It's a real workhorse that has seen very little use these days. Still in perfect working order. I'll probably keep it since its my OG grill.

I also recommend the Weber Genesis although it does have a side burner.

I’ve had this one for a couple months now and love it so far.

Looks like a LOT of the Napoleons are this dimension.
This is why I keep y'all around.

Sounds to me most Napoleon grills are made in China as is my Victory. Some are mfg in Canada.
I picked up my all stainless steel Lp gasser from BBQ guys with a rotisserie and a cover $699 I believe.
It will surely out last me if cared for. Spend the other $500 on protein from Porter. Firebox meas 16x26. For the three burner. With a side infrared.
I picked up grill grates that must have been close outs 3 panels n a spacer. Not sure the cost for the grill grates.
I hope to put together an outdoor kitchen, using some granite I picked up on the cheap. I am going to try to use two cabinets one from the gasser and the other from a a four burner porcelain griddle (Victory as well) as supports under the granite and mount the gasser hood over the already cut sink hole. The griddle, alone, measures 36 x 18 outside dimensions.
My mistake Three burner w/ infrared side burner. Cover incl. $599.00 Sale ends 3/3 BBQguys.
No mention of the roti. I am sure one can be had for under a hun. Orig $999.99 40% off.
