My neighbour just purchased this, it is a beast the box was well over 200#, he just completed the assembly. He will probably fire it up today. I think this is a new model, it seems to have some good features. You can open a damper to let smoke from the pellet grill into the gas grill. He has asked me for advice, I told him to go to Amazing Ribs and he will not be disappointed. It was on sale at Lowe’s.

Interesting... Pit Boss has had some problems, but have also formed a solid niche in the market of the entry-to-mid-level big box crowd. I don't hate them, I know a number of people who have them and like them just fine. I don't expect them to last 20 years, but for the niche they're aiming for, they're definitely cleaning up in terms of sales volume and probably overall company profit.
It's getting more people into the 'smoking meat' hobby at a reasonable price point, which is good AND bad for the hobby - meat demand goes up, supply costs get pressured. Now briskets routinely cost $80-100. Ugh!

From what I've read, here and elsewhere, meat prices are a much bigger function of greatly reduced supply, what with herds being culled in drought-stricken areas and other factors, rather than a surge in demand from more meat-smoking customers. Can't remember who, but some regulars here wrote about this over a year ago, predicting that prices would go up and stay up for a while...

DaveD yes we talked last year about how the extended drought conditions through much of the country last year led to massive culling of herds, even some breeding stock, in the second half of last year. That leads to reduced availability and increased pricing this year and going forward for several years, even if we have more rain this year.
I have a local friend who grows hay on maybe 80 of his 450 acres, and he made a killing selling hay to ranchers in Texas last summer.

Congrats to your friend--it's always great fun to have a new smoker to break in and shuttle up the learning curve with. You didn't mention whether or not he is experienced with using smokers and grills. Either way, he will benefit greatly from purchasing Meathead's book.
As far as Pit Boss products go, many people here have Pit Boss smokers and seem to be very happy with them. The three Pit Boss products reviewed on the free side score gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
Your friend should join as a trial member here, which you most likely have suggested, and ask any questions he may have as he starts to use that wonderful purchase. The weather's getting warmer, so it's the perfect time to break that new smoker out, fire it up, and make something delicious.

That's an interesting combination. The ability to use pellets for smoking, gas for grilling, and a side burner for outdoor cooking fills a lot of wish lists people in this forum talk about. Being able to direct smoke from the pellet side over to the gas side adds an interesting dimension. Lowes has it for $799 which seems like a good value for those looking to enter the smoker/grilling game. Have fun!
