Where do you buy your fuel ?

I have been grilling for some time now and have recently around a year or two gained a love of low and slow.

The problem i have is getting quality fuel I usually just end up buying it from the super market but have varying results sometimes it hasn’t been stored very well and is damp or just doesn’t burn well.

Where does everyone else buy their fuel both charcoal and wood ?

The area where I store charcoal and wood has an ambient humidity of 47% right now. I use Kingsford Kaddys to tote around, and some find these also keep everything dry.

Can't speak to where to source fuel in the UK, sorry.

I'm not fussy about charcoal, I buy whatever is cheapest at Walmart or Costco for grilling on my PK360. As for wood to use in my KBQ, I own nine acres of apples and live in the heart of an apple, cherry, and pear growing region, so I don't need to purchase.

Do you have any what we call large box stores over here. Lowes, Home Depot, Wal Mart, etc. your English equivalent. Any place that sells good bbq grills. They should have some charcoal that is better than the grocery store.

We have ASDA which is effectively Wal mart the problem I have is though I’m guessing a lot of our stores are smaller than yours even our bigger ones.

A lot of them tend to place things like charcoal outside.

We went to a store the other day Allen Home bargains and they sell wood and coal but on the way in I noticed they had their coal and wood outside it trollies and it was pouring it down with rain and they were all getting wet through.

They don’t get proper consideration over here.

A lot of our petrol stations (Gas stations) sell charcoal and wood but again they are always stored outside in the forecourt I bought some from one a few months back and when I had opened it the coal was covered in a white mould where it had been damp so I ended up putting it all in the bin.

Well that’s not good. Storing bags outdoor, before sale, isn’t doing the fuel any good. Any options for on line purchasing?

I think that’s the route I need to go down it just finding where to get it from at a decent price 😊

I just Google searched "Nottingham UK firewood," and turned up a few places in Nottingham that sell firewood. Forgive me if you knew this. I was just curious to see what my options would be if I lived where you live. First link is below. Best wishes!

Yeh, owned by a Mr. Hood. Conveniently located adjacent to the Sherwood Forest. 🙂

Thank you for that I use a company called stragglethorpe firewood for wood for my inside log burner although they don’t do coal or specific woods so you can’t order like cherry or apple it’s just hardwood does this make much difference ?

My opinion is that in a stick burning smoker the kind of hardwood is not as important as some people make it out to be. I tend to use hickory and cherry because that's what's available where I live. I think the important question is are you pleased with the taste you get using Stragglethorpe's product, despite not knowing the specific hardwood you are getting? If it tastes good and you're happy with the source, go with it! Maintaining a consistent, clean fire is probably most important aspect.

Our local hardware store has a great grilling department. I get all my stuff there.

You might also try Costco. Not sure if there’s one in Nottingham but there is at least one in Derby...so not too far away...

Yes it is only a little over 19 KM. The Costco's over here have great meats also.

When I joined Costco back in the 80's there were restrictions, you had to be a business owner of work for certain large employers. I believe that is all in the past here, I think anyone with $60 can become a 'Gold Star' member.

As ComfortablyNumb stated, we used to... Now one just needs to pay for the membership.

I don’t recall when, or why, that changed but now I’m wondering if if occurred around the same time that Sam”s Club came onto the scene. Sam”s Club is the Walmart equivalent.

I have a local hardware store that I go to for fuel. They carry B&B for me that I come in and pick up every two weeks. They will also get some FOGO for me too, if I order it. The owner is a Pit member and he knows how to handle and store charcoal. (Ace Hardware in Hopkins in case any MN members are curious, Pete is a good bird)
