Cob smoked bacon (or ribs or ..)

Someone I know saw "cob smoked bacon" on a restaurant menu in New England and asked me what it is.

A little research indicated it is bacon which is smoked over corn cobs...after a little more searching, found a few cooking sites which suggested this is as easy as letting leftover corn cobs dry out and then substituting them for smoking wood (eg add chunks to a charcoal fire).

I think I've seen just about every smoking technique imaginable discussed on this forum at some point, but can't remember this one.. Anyone here tried it?

You might enjoy this article. One place we lived had a county run historical sod house and they would demonstrates using corn cobs as fuel in their stove and for heating. Smelled better than using buffalo chips and your hog did the shelling for you.

Harvest is finished here in the Corn Belt, and it seems like this would be a very appropriate time to talk about using corn cobs as fuel in ...

There was a company trying to popularize corn cob pellets, I don't think it took off. Odd considering I remember a corn cob stove at my friends house as a kid and I thought it smelled lovely and seemed to heat up just fine (then again I didn't live anywhere remotely cold)

I have a Cobb portable BBQ that I use when camping and on my boat (stay cool exterior). It was originally developed to run on Corn Cob fuel for poverty stricken families in Africa. Not true grilling but pretty tasty food and only needs 8-10 briquets to run.
