I've cooked with multiple brands of briquettes and lump. Lump burns cleaner and hotter. I don't like RO and won't purchase it ever again (I've heard similar criticisms of Cowboy). Last year Walmart put 30 pound bags on Western lump on clearance for $6.95 per bag. I thought it was better than RO but not as good as Kamado Joe lump ($25 for a 20 pound bag). I went through 5 bags and found a 2 foot long piece of twine in 1 bag. The other 4 bags didn't have any foreign objects and much less dust than RO. It did have a lot of really small pieces at the bottom of the bag, but you get what you pay for and I still feel it delivered excellent value given what I paid. Our local Walmart has 20 pound bags of B&B lump for $12. People on this site said very good things about it but I don't particularly care for it. To be fair, it has few really small pieces, no foreign objects and minimal dust. The problem is unless it's fully lit the smoke that emanates from it produces a really off-putting flavor.
For low/slow Weber briquettes absolutely rock and it is my absolute go-to when smoking. The smoke flavor it puts off when partially lit is very woodsy and very pleasant. Stubbs is nice too. I picked up a couple of bags on clearance this winter but I haven't seen it recently, which is a shame. Embers is mostly crap, but it's dirt cheap - cheaper than KBB. I use it strictly for mundane meals on the grill and to get sticks lit in my OKJ. It does light quickly but make sure it's fully lit, any smoke that comes from it is extremely off-putting. It leaves a ton of ash too, more than KBB.
