    BGE Lump Charcoal Question

I've seen several members mention buying BGE lump charcoal. Just checked some prices Is it really worth the extra $$? A 10 Lb bag for $38.00; Local stores sell 10 lb bags of natural oak or hardwood lump for $8 to $10. Also saw other brands online for prices in the $20 range and I just wonder what the difference is.

Sorry if this question has been posted before, I did a quick search and didn't find a post about this.

Me personally I think the extra money is worth it . I was a BGE charcoal user for a long time. But lately I was really unhappy with the size of the chunks

I heard really good things on this site about Fogo

I bought a bag and I have not looked back .

every piece is fully burned there are no chunks of crap and I really like the flavor .

I know not everyone likes Royal Oak, but I think it is a better bargain. Also, I believe that Roya Oak makes BGE. Recently I found Royal Oak in 30# bags for $16.97, it seems to have a higher percentage of large lumps than the 15# bags.

BGE is RO. Walmart has the 15# for 7.89. An awful lot of BGE owners love Rockwood now available in CA at ACE

I just bought Cowboy lump charcoal at Lowe’s 17 lbs for $9.95. Saw a YouTube video that compared the burn and Cowboy performed well compared to BGE. That being said they also mentioned there is more gravel etc in the Cowboy bags but for 9.95 I can deal with that.

I switched from the BGE to Royal Oak and haven't been able to tell a difference, but I haven't done any extended cooks with either.

One good thing about FOGO that doesn’t get mentioned is that it is clean burning right from the get-go. Good stuff.

Rockwood is excellent lump and you can find it on sale at Ace at different times of the year.

My Favorites are Fogo, B&B, Rockwood, and Royal Oak in that order. IMO B&B is the best bang for the buck. I have found that all my listed favorites (except Fogo) can sometimes end up with a lot of small pieces which I blame to over handling or being on the bottom of a shipping pallet.

The only bag of Royal Oak I have bought (and it was a big one) was completely small chips. Almost unusable. I'll stick with B&B and Fogo.

I use Royal Oak routinely. For special things I'll use Fogo. I don't like the taste Cowboy leaves in the food. Good lump is worth the price.

As others have said, BGE Lump is just RO in a green bag. Which is very unfortunate, I wish they would come out with a solid lump product. I get it, they are not in the biz of making lump so it makes sense to go private label. However, I think it cheapens the name. So it goes.........

I prefer to use FOGO, but I use a ton of B&B. Both are very high quality and I get great, steady burns for hours and hours. FOGO edges out B&B, in my book, but you pay more for it. I like to buy B&B because I get it from my local Hance Hardware that is owned by a fellow Pit member, Pete. (Pete for give me for not knowing your Pit name!) And it is always fun to go in and chat with him. I actually had them order B&B for me in the past, now they stock it regularly! (So if you are in the Twin Cities, check out Hopkins Hance Hardware, great people.)

Spinaker, I get B&B Lump at Ace Hardware in Fairmont. I had them get me some B&B Briquettes too. IMO they a nice upgrade from KBB. Try 'em sometime.

Do you run the briquettes in your BGE? Skip

Lump only in the BGE. Briquettes in the Weber Kettle and PBC.

Another vote for B&B, always consistent and the price point isn't bad either.

Thanks for the replies. I have been using B&B - I buy it at HEB and it is $7.58 for 10 lbs. of Texas Style Oak lump charcoal. Much cheaper than other brands I've seen and I have good results with it. Based on the above comments I'll stay with B&B.
