My local Ace Hardware store started carrying the B&B briquettes this spring, after carrying the B&B lump last year. Out of curiosity I picked up a bag for Mom's day weekend to compare it to Kingsford Professional and whether or not it was worth the $13.99 for 17.6 lbs bag. Jerod Broussard has been singing their praises for as long as I can remember, so once it finally showed up here in town I couldn't resist the temptation to give it a go. I am now almost all the way through this bag and unfortunately, I have yet to smoke anything. The longest cook I have had with it was some meatloaf and chicken breasts the other night...just some basic grilling type stuff, along with burgers and steaks.
The first thing I noticed was the size of each individual briquette was substantially bigger than the Kingsford Pro. Once I picked one up to examine it, you could see the wood in the briquette. It is like they took a bunch of their lump and compressed it into a briquette. The second thing I noticed was the lack of acrid smoke on start up. I kept checking the grill to make sure I actually had the thing lit! Pretty cool.
Final thoughts - Well, I can't finalize my thoughts because I haven't performed a proper cook that takes longer than 90 minutes. I will have to go fetch another bag before this weekend and try my hand with ribs or some sort of 4+ pound chunk of meat. I do like that it fires up just quickly as KP, has very little acrid smoke and has plenty of heat for the cooks I performed. More to follow.
PS - While I was snooping around on the Ace Hardware's website I ran across B&B Competition Char-logs in a 30 lbs bag. I am seriously considering ordering a bag as the logs look like they would work great in my Lodge Sportsman grill.
