B&B Charcoal Briquettes - Orange Bag

My local Ace Hardware store started carrying the B&B briquettes this spring, after carrying the B&B lump last year. Out of curiosity I picked up a bag for Mom's day weekend to compare it to Kingsford Professional and whether or not it was worth the $13.99 for 17.6 lbs bag. Jerod Broussard has been singing their praises for as long as I can remember, so once it finally showed up here in town I couldn't resist the temptation to give it a go. I am now almost all the way through this bag and unfortunately, I have yet to smoke anything. The longest cook I have had with it was some meatloaf and chicken breasts the other night...just some basic grilling type stuff, along with burgers and steaks.

The first thing I noticed was the size of each individual briquette was substantially bigger than the Kingsford Pro. Once I picked one up to examine it, you could see the wood in the briquette. It is like they took a bunch of their lump and compressed it into a briquette. The second thing I noticed was the lack of acrid smoke on start up. I kept checking the grill to make sure I actually had the thing lit! Pretty cool.

Final thoughts - Well, I can't finalize my thoughts because I haven't performed a proper cook that takes longer than 90 minutes. I will have to go fetch another bag before this weekend and try my hand with ribs or some sort of 4+ pound chunk of meat. I do like that it fires up just quickly as KP, has very little acrid smoke and has plenty of heat for the cooks I performed. More to follow.

PS - While I was snooping around on the Ace Hardware's website I ran across B&B Competition Char-logs in a 30 lbs bag. I am seriously considering ordering a bag as the logs look like they would work great in my Lodge Sportsman grill.

Very interesting even though I have not seen that product in my area.

Love me some B&B briqs, very consistent from cook to cook......Whether H&F and L&S. I’ve cooked on my PBC and it loves the B&B briqs. Interested to hear your results on the charlogs

The B&B briquets are a must if you're going to load down a Pit Barrel with four to five briskets.

          I can almost get 15 hours at 225 in a 22" kettle.

I love the B&B briqs, I pretty much use it exclusively. Similar to Jerod, I can get about 12hrs in my SNS and 26” kettle.

I would like to find B&B Briquettes in Minnesota. I like their lump!

Never seen the stuff near me. Jerod has long convinced me to try it so I will if I ever see it.

I used B&B Lump for the first time in my WSCGC a couple of weeks ago and was not impressed. The temps never did dial in rock solid like they always do with KBB. I'm going to give it another try, though, hoping that maybe it was just a one-off problem.

The guy from Flying Smoke did a "shoot out" comparison with B&B and Kingsford Professional. He uses B&B in his competition cook offs. B&B produced temps 100°s hotter than Kingsford. Haven't yet tried B&B myself, but I'm going to.

                        - I converted from KBB about 3 years ago. I use B&B orange bag exclusivly now in my original PK and Weber kettle. I have had great results and do not miss the KBB smoke upon lighting.
                        - In my Hasty Bake I use a combo of Orange bag B&B and B&B char logs (red bag) for longer cooks. Have had super results holding temps easily for 6+ hours (beef ribs). Have yet to use the combo on a brisket.
                        - I also use Napoleon Coconut charcoal in conjunction with B&B orange bag and can get almost 10 hrs on the Hasty Bake with no issues (brisket). I just ordered some Blazing Coconut charcoal off of Amazon but have not sampled it yet. The Blazing was on sale $27 for 20lbs which comes out a bit cheaper than the Napoleon at $34 for 23lbs.
                        - As far as B&B lump goes I like it alot. Been using it in the Kamado's for a few years. Have yet to have even a marginal bag of the stuff. Great buy for the price in my opinion. BTW you can burn the Coconut briqs in your kamado. Yes it produces more ash BUT has a very nuetral smoke profile (read great for baking).

Same here (Ace carrying those) and they went on sale for $10/bag. I like them a lot for longer cooks. They seem to last longer and be very consistent over time.

I love those B&B briquettes. Definitely a different smell than KBB. They burn nice and clean. This reminds me I need to go get some more.

I read somewhere on Amazing Ribs, I believe, that Weber sourced their briquettes from B&B. If true, would be an appropriate replacement for the lamented Weber item.
