I was at the Home Despot (I like HD but also like puns) and Saw Embers on sale there. I've used all KBB or some of their flavored briquettes in the past. I'm just curious if anyone else has tried this brand and what their results were? Did it get too hot? Does it ash more or less than KBB. I'm sold on adding wood and using basic charcoal (til I go through the flavored stuff) and would like to cut down on the ash a little but that's it. That and the Embers is on sale this week.

In Meatheads book he states " Pick one brand of briquet, learn it and stick with it for at least a year until you have all the other variables worked out".
Don't know if that helps you or not. I started with Kingsford Original and continue to use it. Usually look for the 2 bag package on sale.

Raphaeld I can tell you it is simply royal oak briquets rebranded as embers specifically home depot. I have an enormous stack of it right now as home depot marked it way down over the winter to make room for their spring stock. In my experience, it's perfectly good charcoal. I use it often. The main area I would dock points is in burn consistency. For me, Kingsford burns pretty much completely down to ash. However, with royal oak/embers, I will occasionally see a few briquets in the ash pile that either didn't burn up or only partially burned. No big harm though. If doing low n slow, I'd recommend very lightly knocking the ashes off after a few hours.

Saw it online at my HD today, as well...
I reckon at that price I'll go pick up several two-packs, give em a try...
can always use em fer quick direct lunch cooks we frequently have at work.
I've never been displeased when I've used Royal Oak, so hopin this is th same experience...
It must be expected to sell well; my HD has 450+ bags in stock, vs. 164 KBB...

Our local Home Depot had it on clearance this winter for $1.90 per 14.5 pound bag. I bought 11 bags and have gone through a couple. It's OK. It lights up pretty quick, which is nice. It puts off an off-putting smoke smell while it's heating up. It cooks fine, although it seems to burn out a bit quicker than other briquettes. The ash is in the shape of the briquettes, which is kind of strange but no big deal. For the price I paid, I'm happy with it. I put it on par with KBB.

I use it in my PBC just fine. Haven't left the lid on after cooking to see how long it lasts. Have to remember to do that next time.
