This is what was on close out at Walmart $5.00 for a 30 pound bag. I was uncertain as to the quality, since a 2003 review on the Naked Whiz rated it poor. When I opened the bag I was pleasantly surprised to see all hard wood with a good distribution of sizes, but the large wasn’t quite as some of the really large pieces I usually get in Royal Oak. However, it appeared that all the charcoal was from tree. I did a test run at 225 in my BGE with the platesetter in and the results have been amazing. I left the house this morning with it still burning at the 21 hour mark. When I returned home this morning at 11am the temp had dropped to 200, the so I removed the platesetter, stirred the charcoal, replaced the plate setter and it is still holding temp at the 28hour mark.

I saw this yesterday at Walmart for $10 for a 30 pound bag and meant to create a thread inquiring about its quality. It looks like it's pretty decent quality. Thank you for creating this thread and saving me the effort.

My friend put me on to it for $10 so you can imagine my delight when I found it for $5 - that’s 75% below what I would pay for Royal Oak on sale. I bought 150# and would have bought more if I had storage space. My friend feels cheated.

LA Pork Butt I am going to bide my time and wait for our local Walmart to drop the price. A few weeks ago someone at The Pit bragged about getting it for $3 per bag and filled an entire room with the stuff. It was customtrim

I am goin to bed now it is still holding 250 after 35 hours. I expect it won’t last until morning. I didn’t cook much on It - only a cauliflower, a small piece of salmon and a pork tenderloin. I think that contributes to the long burn.

Thanks @LAPorkButt for the heads-up. The charcoal was $7.50 for a 30# bag at Walmart in The Midlands of South Carolina. Only picked up 4 bags as that was all I could get in the Honda. Going back today with the pickup truck!

At 6am the temperature had dropped to 200, and it still had charcoal. So, I gave it a little more air and the temp came up to 225. I never tested to see how long my BGE would cook on one load of charcoal, so now I’m curious. I did go 22hours on 40#s Boston Butt, but the charcoal was completely burned when I finished. I put new gaskets on so that might be a factor as to how long this charcoal is burning. I’ll keep you posted.

Never tried to go that long myself, but after an overnight, there was always charcoal left in the BGE.

If you are in an area with more than one WalMart in the neighborhood, you might want to check more than one store to see who has the best deal. Managers have a lot of discretion on how they mark stuff for clearance, and some will be more aggressive to clear stuff out to make space. After all, they need to get the summer grilling stuff out so they can set up for Halloween and Christmas. (Until recently my son was in management for WalMart)

As I am writing this I am wondering whether just reading it as someone else’s post would leave me a little skeptical. It is now 8:30 pm and the temperature is still holding at 250. I made adjustments for air flow four times and stirred the charcoal twice, it it has been burning for 58 hours on one load of this charcoal in my BGE. I doubt whether it will continue to burn until morning, so after it cools down I post pics of the volume of ash and any charcoal left. I am still amazed.

Produces produces more ash than Royal Oak: see photo for Royal Oak full load burn.

Given your results I'll definitely be purchasing a bunch of this stuff. I'd be very curious to know how many really little pieces are at the bottom of the bag.
