    Kingsford Long-Burning Charcoal Briquets

Looking for some insight, opinions and results.

I bought a bag of Kingsford Long-Burning Charcoal Briquets for the first time to try it out in my WSM. I used the fuse setup. After preheating to 225° I started cooking two slabs of ribs. I know that the temp always drops from opening the lid and putting cold food in the smoker. After about 15 mins the temp only recovered about 5°. I pre-lit some more briquets to help with the temp. I hit my target temp and let it do it's thing. After the 1st hour the temp has drop 10°. I have used the fuse setup for years and always had good luck with it. Pre-lit some more briquets to help with the temp. After the next hour the temp drop 10° again. I had to work the smoker to keep the temp around 225°. After all was done and 6 hours later the ribs turn out pretty good. I had to work harder and use more briquets.

How did you have your vents set up? Also, 225 is way over-rated IMO. I prefer the 250-290 range. Also, you don't really need to nail an exact temperature. As long as you are in the 220-290 range you should be good. If 290 spooks you then shoot for the 220-270 range.

Thanks for the reply. I would not be spook about a temp swing of a +/- 35°.It's just that I can hold the temp at a +/- 5° for about 5 hrs with Kingsford original charcoal. I find that this charcoal has a low temp burn so more briquets to hold the temp.

Sounds like an airflow issue. Did you open the bottom vents up more?

Thanks for your reply. I use bbq guru partyQ temp control unit for some time now and its was running more than usual.

I tried the long burning briquettes once and wasn’t very impressed.

Never seen those in Canada, but it sounds like i don't want them anyway. Good advice.

Weber briquettes burn quite a bit longer than KBB and a 20 pound bag can be had at Lowe's for $12.

Thanks! That is also something I like to try.

I might give those a try. Thanks for the suggestion, Jeff.
