Last week, Home Depot had a pallet of Weber brand charcoal, 20lb bags, on clearance for $4.99.....bought two bags. This week, had a few left and bought a couple more.
Questions: Has anyone used Weber charcoal, how did you like it, and why was it on clearance?

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
Cookers:
Large Big Green Egg with a Ceramic Grill Store rack system, and the SnS setup.
Weber Genesis SA-E-330 LP INDIGO with SS Grates, Weber Crafted frame kit, baking stone, griddle (2/3), all from Ace Hardware.
For the first time in a long time I have no kettles as I gave them all away.
Everything Else:
SnS #3 with certificate. I was their first customer.
Sous Vide equipment.
SnS and Thermoworks instant read and leave-in thermometers.
Grill Grates for BGE.
Kingsford Blue Bag, Weber lighter cubes, Weber charcoal chimneys.
Rubs with salt: Meat Church Holy Cow.
Rubs without salt: Home-mixed versions of previously sold SnS Grills Rocky's Rub and Not Just for Beef using their recipe. SPOG.
Spices: Lots of 'em.
I've used it once on a long cook (chuck roast) and it lasted longer than Kingsford Blue Bag. The bag has a zip-seal which I like and will buy more, if I can find it on sale.
Edit to add: I just checked my local stores. Lowes...$11.99 but they don't have any...Home Depot $19.99. I like it but not at $1 / lb. I can get B&B hardwood briquettes at my Academy - 17.6 lbs for $9.99 when I want a longer burn time than KBB.

I agree with JeffJ. I've always used KBB but picked up some Weber when our Lowes had it on sale for $12/bag (normally $20, just too overpriced). The first time I used it was last Fall, went to a friend's house to show him how to use the snake method in his new Weber performer to smoke some ribs. I'd done that several times with KBB and my snake was about 80% burned usually. He happened to have Weber briquettes, and the snake that day was just over 50% burned. Now I'm trying to get him to buy a SnS! 😆

I like it. I've used it several times and have been pleased with the results. It has a woodsy smell when it's heating up, suggesting that it might impart a subtly more pleasing taste (not been confirmed by me) than KBB. DWCowles
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
We've had some recent discussion on the Weber charcoal. I've got a couple bags that I have yet to open, waiting to work through my KBB stockpile first. Read more about how people liked it here:
I think I read where Weber charcoal was a re-brand of Royal Oak Ridge. Like so many other vendors, I don’t think Weber actually makes charcoal. That being the case, you can have it, don’t like ROR.

Reason: I just did some research and retract my post, it's NOT ROR
