I may have to buy some Matchlight :-(

My wife and I have a cabin reserved in a state park for a few days and I would like to grill out a few times (cabin has a full kitchen). From what I can tell from the info and pics there is no fire ring for the cabins and the grill is one of those hibachi types with the three-level grate, open front, and the grate is not removable.

I don't see how I can get lit coals from a chimney slid in there without packing a shovel, which I don't really want to do. Do I just have to bite the bullet and buy some matchlight (shudder in shame)? Cause I can't think of anything else. Just want to grill some burgers, steaks, sausages, you know, camp food.

Thoughts? Do I have to rescind my Pit Membership if I do buy some?

Are you talking about lighter fluid aka LF. I use it 99% of the time in my Pit Barrel.

No, I figured I would never use a whole bottle of lighter fluid. So just a bag of matchlight. Ever since I discovered a chimney that's all I use.

Get a pack of firestarters and use your regular charcoal.

Starter cubes should work well and minimize the chemical odors on your food.

Hmm. I know I did that once with a chimney but for the life of me I don't remember how I got the coals in there.

Get some of the Weber starter cubes from Home Depot or Lowe's. They always get the fire started.

Thanks guys. I don't think I realized a starter cube would light un-treated charcoal. This is good to know. This is why this is the best resource out there.

Just put a few coals on top of it and light it. You'll have the fire going in a few minutes.
When I want to light a whole chimney of KBB, I just put a fire starter on the grate, light it and put the chimney over it. Coals are all burning nicely in less than 15 minutes.
              So, yes they will.

They do sell small bottles of LF.

I don't dig the Matchlight stuff. I can cover with LF and light within 5 seconds. Great fire show that cleans my grates and lights with the ultimate consistency.

I have vivid memories of a Backdraft situation concerning LF in college. Alcohol may or may not have played a part. Cleaned the grate and the side of the balcony.

Dig a hole in the yard. Fill with KBB lit w/chimney. Use rack from oven....grill food!

Too short of a trip to justify. My Weber Kettle has travel many miles.

Glad you are not going to a national Forrest, If you camp there you are required to have a shovel with you

I only use the Weber cubes to light my chimney until.... ALAS... the slow n sear. Cyber are amazing. If you are packing your chimney, light it, then you can take a sheet pan or metal dust pan from the kitchen dump on there in batches and slide them off into your "Communal Hibachi."

These things work great. One square will light a chimney, so you won't need more than two. https://bbqdragon.com/product/green-...fire-starters/

Never mind the shipping charge is ridiculous.

Huge shipping charges in the face of Amazon Prime is a bold move.

Echo / ditto the idea to just light the charcoal in place using a starter.

I've been real happy with the Rutland Safe Lite Fire Starter Squares. Lit charcoal with or without chimney. Lit Presto-log type pressed wood logs in the wood stove easily, even ones with a reputation as extra hard to light. One square does it, and WAY cheaper than the Weber cubes ($21.21 for 144 vs $9.32 for 24). Claims to light when wet, but I haven't tried that. Squares have to be broken apart, so not quite as convenient.

Once again lost the "How to rig the Amazon URL to set the AR referral", so here they are without:

The Weber starter cubes are only $3.99 for a 24 pack at HD or Lowe's. Amazon keeps moving the price up and down depending on whether or not they're offering "free shipping".

You could buy the smaller bags of kbb and place the entire bag in the grill. Then cut the top of the bag open and light the bag on fire. This will get the kbb going good.
