    Lump Charcoal Talk

I've read a lot about not using RO lump Charcoal. Has anyone experimented with Cowboy lump and/or Blues Hog lump?

    #2
I can only speak to my Royal Oak experience. I like it except that all the bags I've purchased have a lot of dust and some foreign objects such as plastic in the bags. It's available locally and the price is good. I've not tried Cowboy or Blues Hog.

I like Cowboy lump. Do NOT like RO lump.

I use Cowboy lump all the time with good results. I also add in the Kamado Joe brand for long cooks. They have a very dense hardwood with lots of big lumps which I hand pick for the really long cooks. Great for pizza cooks too for the high temps.

I've used RO, but never noticed the foreign objects. Lump size varies quite a bit though, with dust, as mentioned by fuzzydaddy. Haven't used lump in a while though.

Have been a fan of Stubbs for a while, and bought some B&B this year I am really happy with so far. Both briquettes.

No experience with the others you mentioned.

I tried B&B a month ago and LOVE that stuff. My Academy Sports only carries a few bags at a time so I keep checking the site to see when they get it back in stock. I snagged another two bags last weekend.

I have never seen Stubbs in MN. What are the advantages of mixing?

I like to use Rockwood Charcoal. It has a great variety of pieces. And its made from American Hardwoods. Very few people handle it before you buy it. So the product has not been thrown around a lot. Why is this important? There is very little dust and the pieces in much better shape. I have been very happy with it. Others will say they like brands like RO and Cowboy, but I personally avoid them. I am with FD, I have found a lot of foregin objects in the bags I have purchased over the years.

Spinaker Got lucky.. Rockwood is available at Ace Hardware and our local BBQ supply house. Can't wait to give it a shot. Little pricey, but at least I don't have to pay for shipping. Thank again for the recommendation.

New (01/2017) member here. Couldn't agree more--I've switched from RO to Rockwood (using initials to show I'm "with it") and think it's worth every penny. Hard to find in NJ; local butcher/specialty store sells it. I liked RO but became frustrated with amount of dust and fines (edited comment to add reason for change).

SMO mixing briquets with lump, I've read on some bbq forums has produced a unique flavor profile. I have a Lowe's 5 min away from my house and they sell those exclusively. Learning the ways of the force with new gateway drums arriving soon. Been a pellet guy for a while.
Spinaker Thank you stud. I may use cowboy and Stubbs for home use. Really researching the best products possible for when I start doing comps in a couple months. Best products yield best BBQ in my book. Hard to get things wrong other then falling asleep and forgetting to check your product.

I buy my lump coal at Smart & Final because it's the cheapest lump I can find, .45 cents per pound. A firebox full in my large BGE will cook at 225° for 24 hours or more without adding more lump. Sometimes the big chunks are so big I have to break them up with a hammer. There's not an unreasonable amount of dust and I do occasionally find small stones in the bag, no big deal to me. I have no inclination to find better lump at higher prices after 6 years of using my cheap lump.👍

BarBQ22, These look very interesting to me. No financial interest here. While I was impressed with the briquettes, which say no added chemical fillers or additives, these competition logs claim no fillers or additives period.

https://www.bbcharcoalproducts.com/p...ar-logs-30-lbs Looks to be about .56 cents/lb. Didn't check shipping charges, but they are sold at Academy Sports apparently, which is where I got the Oak briquettes.

Looks to be a consistent size, and with the whole in the middle, probably breathe well.

I guess the bag still says no (chemical) additives or fillers still. There was a place on the page that didn't include the chemical, so I misread. Sorry. Still, I wanna try them, as the briquettes burned so clean.

Very cool. I had overlooked them for some reason. My Academ is selling them at $19.99 for the 30lb bag which still isn't bad. Academy says they price match so maybe I can get them to sell it for $16.99 a bag since the B&B site lists that price. Thanks for posting!

phoccer, The Academies around here seem very well stocked. Only a few bags of each inside, near the grill equipment, but pallets upon pallets out front. Let me know about the price match please, and if you try the logs.

I've used both Royal Oak and Cowboy brands a fair bit. They tend to have smaller pieces, but, overall, but they cook well with no issues. The premium brands I've used seem to have larger pieces. They are good too, but burn a little bit longer for equal weight used. When I can spend a bit more, I use the premium brands, but I do not feel the cheaper brands to be a "step down." They're just a bit different, and require slight adjustments to how I cook. I guess I'm lucky, as I've never bought any bag of lump with plastic and other undesirables in it, so I can't speak to other folk's experiences. I've been recently(over the past year) been experimenting with making my own lump, and the results are encouraging. More on that another time. What making my own lump has taught me is that if it burns, it is useful, regardless of size. If you have smaller lump, and want more flavor, add some chunks of your choice, as the lump is for heat only(at least for the way I currently cook). Any flavor the lump adds is extra. The chunks of mesquite(or whatever) do the heavy lifting so to speak.

I have used a lot of Royal Oak with good success. Sometimes there can be a little foreign stuff in it but not enough to bother me. It is a much better value IMO than BGE Lump which is suppose to be the same stuff. I have also ordered Fogo a few times. I also like that a lot and even though it's expensive it burns longer than RO IMO. My conclusion is that you pretty much get what you pay for. I don't feel there is all that much difference in flavor profile either. Just my two cents worth.

I'm with you on RO and foreign material. As for burn time I have gone 22 hours on 40#s of Boston Butt. I can't imagine needing any longer unless I have mor volume, but if the fuel runs out I can finish in the oven. My only objection to RO is sometimes there are too few large pieces.

I too am a RO user. Yes on the dust on bottom of the bag which I manage to carefully "leave" it in the bag as I shake out the last pcs, may have to grab a handful or two by hand but I leave the dust in the bag. Roll it up and either chuck (chuckie??) it or burn them in a bonfire pit. 10 bucks for a 17 lb bag. I burn it quite freely and as Breadhead mentions, I get very long and consistent 250 degree cooks without adding lump (provided its not 15 degrees overnight doing a double boston butt cook, I had to reload that night).

Yes I do find a stone in the bottom of my cooker from time to time that comes from the RO. Not enough of a problem for me, very happy with RO.

Does this have maple in it? I like Rockwood for pork. Its okay for brisket. Im looking for lump that doesn't have maple in it for my briskets. I have a heck of a time trying to figure out what's in some of these lumps, cuz its not posted on their websites.
