My terminal MCS progressed in this order over the past 3 years: electric, gas, pellet, charcoal. The charcoal phase began recently, about 4 months ago, with a weber kettle followed by a PBC a couple months after that. Before I got into smoking I always had gas grills, so until now I have never been a regular consumer of charcoal. That's part of my dilemma. Unlike beer prices, which I am intimately familiar with, I don't have a feel for KBB cost at different retailers yet. Therefore, I'm not sure what a good or great deal on the different size bags are. I'd like to know when I see one so I can stockpile the stuff.
Where have y'all found the best deals? Are there any holiday (labor day, July 4th, memorial day, etc) sales that I should look to stock up on?
Home Depot and Lowe's always has it on sale during any summer holiday at half price. However, it goes pretty fast so make sure you get there prior to the holiday.
The first sale is usually Memorial Day. Lowe's and HD usually sells the double bag (18.6 #s) for $9.99. They typically have a limit. So, you can buy your limit from each.

Oh, and there was that amazing Stubbs sale at Lowes last fall. Generally it goes on sale right around grilling holidays and then the "clear the rest of this out for Christmas stuff" sale.

I buy all of my charcoal for the year in the late spring, early summer when Lowes and Home Depot have their sales. It normally sells for 19.98 for the two pack of 18.6 Lb. bags. When they have the sales, it sells for around 9.88 for the same two pack. I still have 4 or 5 two packs in my storage room from those spring/summer sales. That does not really help a lot now, but keep an eye out for the sales as the season arrives and stock up.
Usually in February Costco will sell 2-packs of Kingsford Competition (burns hotter and faster than the Original and produces less ash). I don't recall the price though.
