    Really "lumpy" Lump!

So, for some reason I thought the bag of B&B Oak lump in the shed was about half full, based on weight, when I went to prep the SNS 22" Kamado for smoking the Easter ham, on Saturday night. Imagine my surprise when I dumped it into the bowl and found THIS hodge hodge! Several HUGE hunks, and a bunch of little stuff.

That one "lump" was about the size of a cantaloupe, along with a couple of sizable small logs!

I had to break that one up with a hatchet I keep out there for splitting wood chunks, as it was too tall to put the upper charcoal grate that supports the ceramic diffuser back in place.

And since I didn't have enough to fill the bowl properly, and it was closing time for the local Ace Hardware, I just filled in with B&B briquettes, and all was good when I lit my tumbleweed the next morning. I imagine there was a little more ash than my normal 3-4 hour cook, but it wasn't really an issue for that short of a cook.

I love those huge chunks. Good to have a mixture though. I am a huge fan of B&B charcoal.

That is lumpy. I have been using the Good Charcoal that you get from Sams, but I have had a few pieces like that and the rest was dust. I think I will move on for sure.

I got one of those bags of lump at Sam's last year, and won't get another one. It smelled a little off-putting when burning, compared to any other lump I have ever tried. And had lots of dust and small pieces in the 30 pound bag.

jfmorris. Have you tried the B&B Hickory Lump? In my experience the Oak variety has significantly larger pieces than the Hickory version, so I’ve now switched over to just using the Hickory. Have found it easier to work with in normal back yard grill and smoker situations, no very large pieces needing to be broken up. The Naked Whiz has reported that all B&B lump varieties are blends that use the same four wood species, just in slightly different proportions, leaning a bit more heavily in favor of the type identified on the label. But it does seem they put the large oak pieces in the Oak variety.

I've used their hickory lump, and you are right that it tends towards smaller pieces. When I am at Academy I get a bag of that and the oak. My local Ace 1/4 mile from the house only has the Oak version, and this is the first time to have such huge hunks in the bottom of the bag.

Over the years I’ve had a bag or two like that: 4-5 *logs* the size of my forearm, a few handfuls of medium chunks, and 9 lbs of dust.

I only use lump for grilling, so I like more consistency. Fogo black bag always did the trick. Most consistent medium chunks in my experience.

Not used the B&B before. I use Jealous Devil lump charcoal and I thought they had some big chunks!

I'm really not loyal to any one brand of Lump. Don't mind large chunks. I can beak those down, what I hate is 10lbs of chips and dust! Problem is, you can't really tell what's in any bag of any brand.

Also, I dump all my Lump into a separate covered plastic bin, that way I pick and choose the pcs I need either for a quick "hot n' fast, or a longer burn. All dust and chips settle to the bottom. seems to work for me!

I’d really rather have the big chunks than a bag with too much small stuff. You can make big lumps smaller but there’s not much that can be done with the too small stuff.

I tried the Meat Church lump for the first time tonight. Can’t speak to the whole bag but first pour was a bunch huge chunks with a mix of medium size pieces that lit quicker. Very happy with it.

I’ve seen people stating it’s good so very nice.
