    B&B Char Logs

I picked up a bag at Ace. Anyone use them? Tips?

    #2
I use in long cooks. They're added to the B&B briquettes. Usually a 2 or 3 placed in the basket, slightly buried underneath the coals.

Excellent for long cooks. I use them with Weber charcoal together for longer cooks, Great product.
BnB is what I ment to say for the briqs.

I've used them in the past. They do burn a long time, but also take a long time to light, so I use them with briquettes or lump to fill in the firebox and get things started.

+1 👍 I put them on top of lump and/or briquettes in my Hasty Bake Legacy for long cooks and get 12 hours before adding fuel.

          They sure do take forever.

+1 with RichieB I always use several of them mixed with briquettes for longer cooks.

Are they manufactured like briquettes, pressed with binders etc.? If so, do they create an excessive amount of ash residue like Kingsford? I'm a Lump guy myself so I've never used them!

Based on an inquiry and an AI response.
No, B&B Competition Char-Logs do not contain chemical binders or fillers. They are manufactured using only natural hardwood lump charcoal and a small amount of vegetable starch as a binder to hold the log shape. This composition results in a cleaner, hotter, and longer burn compared to briquettes with fillers.

And a similar answer regarding theirs briquettes.

B&B charcoal briquettes do not contain chemical additives, artificial ingredients, or fillers. They are composed of100% natural hardwood (such as oak or hickory) and use only vegetable starch as a binder to hold the, according to Instagram and B&B Charcoal.

I can vouch for lower ash with B&B char logs and briquettes, than with Kingsford.

The char logs are denser and pack tighter than briqs and so I was able to get my PBC to run at 225F for 24+ hours untouched.

They are slow burners though so good for long cooks but terrible for grilling and short cooks.

also I don’t use them in a gravity feed smoker because the cylindrical shape with cut ends likes to get stuck with its friends (bridge) in the hopper.

in a barrel or similar they are great.

Do you pack them individually by hand to get them in there tighter? Like snake-methoding briquets?

To piggyback on Murdy comment, roughly how many char logs do you use in the PBC, how do you arrange them, and what is your lighting sequence? Inquiring minds wanna know!

My PBC was donated years ago but to get ~27 hours in a test, I stacked the char logs vertically and packed them in. Then added more on top like a mound. Basically crammed as much in as possible.

The second thing was I had a fan controller installed and I sealed the cover and weighed it so I had efficient control for 225F. I don’t think it would go as long without the fan evening things out.

Also the stock barrel likes to run ~275+, so it won’t last as long at a higher temp.

I’m in the basket of mixing them in with B&B briquettes. I’ll place them vertically with two levels of briquettes neatly stacked. Then I can easily get 14 hours of cook in my Bronco.

I love using them for long cooks in my PBC or WSCGC in kamado mode, started, as many have said, with a chimney full of well lit Kingsford Blue Bag. You're going to enjoy using your purchase.

Come back here and let us know how they work out for you, if you have the time, that is.

So Kathryn, do you use lump at all in your WSCGC, or just briquettes and the char-logs?

Kathryn, how do you keep your PBC temps in smoking range starting with a chimney full of KBB? Mine would stay well over 300F with a full chimney, and it has a good lid seal. I usually light only about 1/4 to 1/3 chimney (depending on charcoal type). Are you at elevation?

jfmorris, I never use lump. Our home is in a densely wooded area, and I didn't trust the sparks that I got the first time I tried it, many years ago. So yes, only briquettes and char logs with wood chunks only for flavor. With what I use, I have no need to switch to lump.

Yes, BourBonQ, I'm at elevation. 3700 ft. My PBC stays in its sweet spot, 260-290° which is where I like to smoke.

To get low temps in the PBC I used a fan controller and sealed everything except for the rod openings.
