    Jealous Devil Max XL Briquettes

Home Depot had the 20lb bags of JD's XL briquettes on sale when I was making a run yesterday so I snagged a bag. My first time using anything of theirs, although I've read of everyone's fondness for them for years.

LOVE IT. This stuff actually smells good while lighting, a feat never attained by any briquette charcoal I've ever tried --I'm looking at you, Kingsford, and especially you, B&B-- I don't remember Royal Oak or FOGO's smell cuz it's been too long, so can't comment directly, but I remember never being impressed with a briquette's light-up smell until these. Jealous Devil smells like some sort of incense to me, I found myself waving the smoke toward my nose as the coals were lighting, like I do from my stickburner's chimney.

But enough of how good it smells to me, how does it cook? Excellent. I didn't do any actual timed trials or anything, simply anecdotal evidence- I paid attention last night as I was lighting my first half-chimney of it for some steaks. It seems to light way faster than B&B and Kford, minimal light-up smoke by comparison, and of course had plenty o' heat. I didn't notice it lasting any longer than B&B, but I know B&B lasts far longer than Original Kingsford. But that means it smells better than B&B and lasts about as long. Check and check.

With the ever-increasing prices of Kingsford I am now experimenting more with other higher priced brands since there's no longer the vast cost difference there once was. Home Depot has these 20-lb bags, normally $18, on sale for $15. Free delivery if ordered online too. A little pricier than Kford and B&B, but great stuff for what it's worth.

Never tried JD before either, heard lots of good things about em though. They are a little pricier than the rest as you mentioned. If you haven’t tried Cowboy charcoal briquettes before, give em a shot. They also smell wonderful to me, never said that about any charcoal before. They are the best “ inexpensive” charcoal I’ve ever used, on par with Kirkland brand from Costco. Two 20 lb. bags are around $18. at Walmart.

Today, Walmart Supercenter in Hurst, TX refused to sell me the 2 bags of Cowboys @$17.92 as posted in their store & on line. All the bags were being sold as single bags for $17.92 for 20 lbs. even with the "2 bags value" labeled and printed on each bag. I took a photo of their labeled price on the display rack as proof. All the bags were singles. I argued with 2 different cashiers
and no luck.I left my cart with the 2 cashiers and walked out.Line at customer service was too
      long & not worth it.

Purc How odd! The two bags are held together with plastic wrap.....that means they must have removed that packaging from each and every two-bag set! I guess it never occurred to them that it was there for a reason.

Yesterday I went to Walmart in Fort Worth and they had the 2 pack of Cowboys @$17.92 regular price and I bought it. Shame on the Walmart in Hurst.

I bought a couple of bags last fall on clearance at Wally World.
I thought they were just okay. I didn't care for the larger size as far as figuring how much to load in the chimney, and felt like they were a little too crumbly when they were hot.
They did the job, no complaints there. They get plenty hot enough for my grilling style.
Like John. I'm a fan of the Cowboy Briqs, and for the price, they can't be beat.

I like Finster have used them. Bought a box of them last year at Academy Sports to try out. Ran out of B&B one evening and gave them a spin. Seemed to light faster than B&B but they did get a little crumbly when hot. They worked fine otherwise. Still yet to try the Cowboy briquettes, on my list.

I just looked at WalMart online - they carry a 15lb bag of the same (vs 20lb at HD) for $11.97. So only a few cents more per pound when you add them up.

The difference is, a 24-pack of the Jealous Devil Boom! firestarters at WalMart are $23.68, while the same 24-pack of Boom! at HD are $12.15! $11.53 cheaper!

So I'm going to buy 2 of the bigger bags and the big box of firestarters from HD.

        Thanks for posting, Huskee!

Have you used them yet? Thoughts?

Cooked with them again tonight, filets for wife & I, left the screen door open so my wife could smell them lighting. She even agreed they smell good. Rare, I'm not crazy.

Edit: I ended up ordering 10 more bags from Home Depot online while still on sale. Free next day delivery, can't beat that.

They were all individually boxed though, I didn't expect that, in boxes much larger than needed for each. So I had 10 cardboard boxes to break down and take to the recycling facility, except for a few pieces I kept for garage floor protection during vehicle fluid changes.

I've used up most of a bag now. They work well, I don't have any complaints. I have a ton of charcoal these days. More than I'll need probably the rest of the year. I know I have a bag of Cowboy briquettes, and a bag of this JD Max left, and I also got 6 bags of B&B on ACE's 4th of July sale. I will probably still be using that up next summer, unless I really get to grilling a WHOLE bunch more than usual.
