Anyone use coconut charcoal? I bought a bag without realizing what it was.

I have used it multiple times. It is great mixed with regular charcoal to extend the burn times. It has been hard to find at a reasonable price for the last year or two so I haven’t bought any more for a while.

Someone once posted here some kind of weird white soot or dust it deposited all over his grates, lid and food. Don remember when or who, but it was the only time I heard anything actually BAD about it, and I think it was an isolated incident. Also vaguely remember it being some kind of small batch, artisinal, boutique, organic bla bla bla stuff.

Maybe the first time I use them should be on an inexpensive piece of meat. I don’t need soot or dust on a nice cook.

I harvested coconuts that the landscaping service was trimming from the trees in my community. After letting them dry out, I cut them into chips for smoking. If I remember correctly, they have a nice fruit flavor that falls somewhere between apple and cherry.

I have only ever used 1 bag of coconut charcoal. Didn't notice any white soot from the charcoal, did find it hard to light so quickly switched to mixing with regular charcoal. I found that it burns hot and lasts a long time. In the end I didn't feel the expense was worth the increased cooking time and I have gone back to using regular charcoal. I didn't notice any change in flavour or in my smoke ring.

Was given some a few years back. Just used a chimney full last week for grilling some lamb chops. Worked fine. No soot to speak of.
