I reuse them just because it's less of a hassle to burn them than to pick them out. I use Kingsford blue briquettes and just knock the ash off of them then dump the new lit ones on top of them. Never had a problem.

I appreciate the spirit of frugality and conservation but ...
They can be reused but you need to be realistic about what you are going to get out of them. They are pretty much always going to be past their peak and aren't typically going to be very numerous. If I am doing a 2-zone I'll put them in the corner where the fire will be. I'll reduce the number of fresh coals I put in the chimney by a little bit and will add the newly lit coals a bit prematurely (the top coals in the chimney will still be mostly black and will only have begun to catch). Bottom line (at least based on my experiences) you aren't going to get much out of old coals. For me it's mostly just convenience. It's easier to burn them out then to try and remove them to make more room for fresh coals. When I've reused coals it's probably resulted in a reduction of about 8 new coals for a cook. It's fun to be a miser but in the grand scheme of things....

I will say this though - if you are going to remove them just toss them into the bottom of the chimney. They'll serve as kindling for your unlit coals.

I reuse them. When I fill my chimney I put the big new KBB "bricks" on the bottom and the semi used ones on top. I fill to my normal levels in the chimney and go. It works just fine. I always knock the dust off of them before I start. I put the dust on my lawn and hose it down. Seems to help my lawn too!
