I reuse them just because it's less of a hassle to burn them than to pick them out. I use Kingsford blue briquettes and just knock the ash off of them then dump the new lit ones on top of them. Never had a problem.

I appreciate the spirit of frugality and conservation but ...
I will say this though - if you are going to remove them just toss them into the bottom of the chimney. They'll serve as kindling for your unlit coals.

I reuse them. When I fill my chimney I put the big new KBB "bricks" on the bottom and the semi used ones on top. I fill to my normal levels in the chimney and go. It works just fine. I always knock the dust off of them before I start. I put the dust on my lawn and hose it down. Seems to help my lawn too!
