    Naked Whiz lump charcoal reviews

I see there have been some posts about this, but it's been a while, per the search, so I thought I'd make it its own topic for search purposes and exposure. I'm impressed with this site.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I'll have my new Super 55 drum smoker this coming week, I am anxious to try it out and see how things go! I expect I'll be doing many cooks with various types of charcoal over the next few months.

Oh, yes, I found out last night about an AMAZING site with charcoal reviews... I'll go post it in its own topic.

Now... this website does APPEAR to be a dangerous thing to click on, I get it... but trust me, as a longstanding member here, I'm not going to try to trick anyone into clicking on something bad - I just checked this and this IS THE RIGHT LINK - but just be careful in your searching if you're sometime trying to remember it and cannot quite get it right - multiple searches along this theme might land you in some hot water at work or at home! Jus' sayin'....

NAKED WHIZ KAMODO STYLE COOKERS AND LUMP CHARCOAL

Trust me! I PROMISE this is a safe link! lol

Maybe you charcoal/lump guys here have known about this site forever - I've never done much with charcoal, and next to nothing with lump, so this is news to me.

Have you looked at the ratings to see what is highly recommended vs what you can consistently find in your area? For me it’s looking like FOGO, Jealous Devil, and Royal Oak are all Highly recommended and I know I can get them consistently. I need to check on the BGE Maple hardwood lump - they tend to keep the BGE stuff all together at ACE and i don’t browse that area. That would be another option for me if they have it. I will report back on burn time vs weight for these in my Kamado. 🔥🔥🐿️

Uncle Bob I was not impressed with Royal Oak either. I wish I could find some Rockwood. FOGO has consistently impressed me. I may just get that from now on. The Blues Hog I used had size distribution issues but otherwise was good 🔥🔥🐿️

I use mostly FOGO, but Jealous Devil is just as good IMO, and easier for me to source locally. I bought Rockwood once, and I must have received bags from the bottom of the pallet; they were both almost all shards. It’s probably fine, but with FOGO and JD, I don’t feel the need to look further.

I love Jealous Devil lump and their briquettes. I find they have excellent burn consistency.

Does this website have a guy parading around saying, "I'm the Whiz, I'm the Whiz!"

No, but, it does have a cartoon dog with a wagging tail.

Uncle Bob it takes at least 2 exclamation marks for that

IMO size is the problem with Royal Oak. Burn time and low ash are really good. Because of the small size or Royal Oak I started checking out other brands to get larger pieces, but I was disappointed with reduced burn time and ash.

If you can find Blues Hog they have a similar rating as royal oak. I also found the amount of smaller pieces was disappointing but you never know if its just crushing from shipment. 🔥🔥🐿️

I have used the Naked Whiz website for several years and generally find the reviews valuable and accurate. I have also spent about 5 five years testing different types of lump. Before then, I exclusively used Kingsford blue bag.

In general, I will say I have developed two rules of thumb.

    1. Unless your local stores are truly awful, ordering charcoal online and paying the embedded shipping is a
waste. Stick with what you can find locally and avoid both the shipping charges and crushed bags.

    2. You get what you pay for. In general, more expensive lump burns longer, better, and produces less ash. Essentially, you need to decide on what your budget is for charcoal and find something local in that per bag price range. You will then be happy. If FOGO is your budget then cool, but it is not for everyone.

For me, I have found Masterbuilt lump is easily available, cheap, and performs very well so that is what I am planning to use for the foreseeable future.

MsTwiggy FOGO is very good and I do like it but it’s not really economical for the amounts I use anyway. Royal Oak follows my rule and is cheap…junk.

STEbbq interesting about the KJ. I have never seen Masterbuilt charcoal. The only reason I tried the KJ was because the price was right and I could have returned it if i wasn't happy with it. The only charcoal I have seen at my local Costco warehouse are two 20# bags of Kingsford pro for $19. The KJ was the only time I saw them sell lump unfortunately. If I had a Traeger I could get pellets to fill a pyramid 😂. Ah well, where do you get Masterbuilt? 🔥🔥🔥🐿️

      MsTwiggy surprisingly enough: Walmart!

We had terrible experience with Royal Oak last weekend - tiny pieces, zillions of 'em, couldn't get good airflow in the charcoal basket - or the lump was overly moist/wet or something. Could NOT get high temps out of it. This mirrored my sole experience with RO as well from a couple of years ago. I won't bother with that red bag anymore.

I have a lot to learn about lump charcoal, once I get my Super 55 drum smoker kit assembled and painted.
