    Cowboy Briquets Used Today

From a previous post I think in discounts the Cowboy Briquets came up. Some positive input so I had picked up the twin pack. Today was my 1st chance to use them. I was impressed with the uniform construction. All were the same size and no broken ones that I saw. I did a rack of St. Louis cut ribs. on the PBJ. I added a couple of chunks of apple but I didn't need to. See the attached video. They took 3 hours and I put them wrapped in the oven til I'm ready to eat. Regarding the Briquets, I was happy with their performance. In the chimney there was a little smoke at 1st but it settled down in five minutes or so. When I took the ribs off, there were still a few unburned briqs, but I'm letting it burn out. Now, something I've never had an issue with is temperature regulation in the PBJ. I could not get the temperature below 300. It was as high as 360. I only had one rebar in. I used the magnets to close off the unused holes and foil to seal the rebar. Plus, I shut the vent as much as it does. I don't know if it was a fluke or the briqs were the reason. If anyone else had a similar experience please share. I'll be doing another cook but I think I'll try the Kettle.

    UPDATE: The ribs were delicious.

Hardwood briquets typically burn hotter than standard briquettes.

I use Cowboy briqs mostly for grilling lately, but I have used them in the PBC in the past with good success. One of the cooks I think I posted about, I got close to 12 hours burn time, running around 280ish, on a single load of Cowboy mixed with a few char logs..

I almost exclusively use these briquettes and love them. My local Walmart always has a palet. They must burn hot because the charcoal grate on my Weber kettle has sagged from all the times I’ve pegged it at 700 plus degrees doing burgers and steaks. They last forever in my assassin 24 GF cooker as well.

I noticed they have Cowboy brand lump at Atwoods now, seen a couple of pallets the other day. Not sure if this is any good - I don't generally use lump for much of anything, so I wasn't sure if ya'll knew if it was worth pickup up a bag or two?

It's just lump so it can't be THAT bad if isn't all that good.

I've tried Cowboy lump a few times. Inconsistent sizing and rocks caused me to stop using it. I do love their briquettes, though. Use them more than any other brand.

I used the Cowboy Briquettes on the Kettle with the Vortex for wings this evening. Well, I was impressed. The thermometer pinged so don't know actual temperature. I didn't add wood but there sure was a subtle smoke taste. Perfect results. At $18 for 40# and Kingsford Blue $19 for 32# it's not a difficult decision. Right now I don't see me going back.
