    Remember those flavored Kingsford briquettes?

I guess they didn't catch on. Home Depot is clearing them out.

To be fair, it was a clever marketing gimmick, but eventually we had to catch on that burning one's spices is not good eats, as it were.

Never had the slightest interest in trying those...

Not trying to pile on or anything, and I’ve never tried it, but I always thought of it as a gimmick. Even if it did impart the flavors advertised, what are you supposed to do, buy all these different flavored charcoal bags depending on what protein you’re cooking?……🙄🙄🙄 Who the hell would want basil, sage and thyme on a brisket?!?! Or a steak?!?!

Ditto ... except for basil. I do generally season burgers and steaks with a bit of onion salt, garlic salt, and dried basil. It sounds weird but it works really well if you don't overdo it.

The other thing is, if you wanted those flavors anyway, it’s MUCH cheaper to have the spices on hand to use yourself, instead of paying a ridiculous price for their charcoal.

This is me piling on. Dumb @ss idea from the start.

My scientific paper on these would get an F because I've never tried them and my opinions are purely anecdotal, but I still formed said opinions. I have chosen to stick with the "'if I want my meat to taste like garlic & onion, I'll use 8 cents worth of garlic & onion powder on it and not $30 worth of "flavored charcoal"" mindset on this one. Get off my lawn.

Agreed....though I'd say, "if I wanted my meat to taste like burnt garlic & onion".

8 cents buys a lot of bulk garlic and onion powder.

Ditto the above - I never understood. I had one guy I asked about it when he posted on FB or something, he said he liked them - but of course, we can convince ourselves of a lot if we spent money on it and have an investment we want to 'pay off'.

        Confirmation bias.

Tried them once while in the Keys at our units grill. I think that i got Hickory for our burgers. If i remember correctly all the Hickory smoke had vanished by the time the charcoal got to cooking temp, thus no smoke or flavor. I wasn't impressed. Also summer is coming to an end and retailers are trying to clear out inventory. Our local Ace has Trager 20 lb bags at 17.00. Normally about 24 here.

A guy I know who was on the team at Clorox said they pushed the flavored briquettes through even though the scientists were not happy with them. Doomed from the start.

Yeah, to me this was a joke from the get go.

I bet they would make for some nice incense to have burning during an outdoor party. (yes, I saw them on sale and I thought about that.)

I kind of want to try one just to see if they would smell as good as it seems like they might.

As long as you added a little salt I didn't find them all that bad.
