    Royal Oak vs B&B

I have been using Royal Oak Chef's Select briquettes for a few years in my PBC and my PR42. I bought a bag of B&B briquettes recently because I needed some charcoal while I was at Academy Sports.

I just did my second cook on my PBC with the B&B. I had a full charcoal basket after over 9 hours there is still almost half the basket that has not touched. I would usually have some of the RO left but not half a basket

It looks like I might be switching brands. I will trying the B&B in my PR42 in a couple weeks and that will be the big test for the B&B.

Has anyone else had similar results with the B&B briquettes?

I save the B&B briquettes for long cooks in either the kettle or PBC. My ACE has them priced way too high. I've found them harder to get lit in the chimney, so I start it with some KBB. Yes, it seems to go longer with more left over.

B&B briquettes definitely last a long time. Throw in some B&B char logs if you have a really long cook. I did a pork butt last weekend in my 22” kettle with SnS. I used B&B briquettes and char logs and still had plenty of charcoal left after 12 hours.

Yeah, B&B is very good charcoal.

I’ve now used BB twice in my OK Joe Bronco. 6 and 8.5 hour cooks with 1/3 of coals left. Unfortunately, I used one bag for two cooks. It’s great. It is also expensive—$17/bag at Ace Hardware.

Do you have a few Ace’s to choose from in your area? I have 2 within 5 miles and one has it for $15 and the other is $13. If you look online you’ll have to change locations to see the price difference.

I have an Ace 2 miles to the east and one two miles to the west. Only one was open on the Sunday I bought the BB. The other one is not likely to be less expensive. I’ll keep an eye out for the sales.

If you live near an Acedemy, buy it there, much cheaper. $10.00 for a 17.6 lb. bag. B & B is better at long cooks than most of the others IMO.

Academy is almost as much fun as a strip club...both trail bass pro shops

I’ve “heard” strip clubs were fun, no actual experience though.

Panhead John, who kidding? Houston and strip clubs are synonymous. Remember I was a frequent visitor to Houston in my working years. I remember seeing plaques in some establishments with your picture next to the words most frequent and loyal patron. I was always jealous.

I can vouch for the charlogs.
I mix some in on all my long cooks

Agree with the length of the burn, but still too ashy for me! Lump from now on!!

I need more time with lump, I feel like I’m missing something by not using it. Less ash, would be nice.

I can vouch for B&B being better than the other available brands of briquettes I've used. RO briquettes gave me my shortest cooks, and B&B my longest, with Kingsford in the middle.

When I spend good money on a nice piece of meat that is seasoned well, I hate to lessen the relaxing/enjoyable experience of the cook by using cheap charcoal that doesn't perform well. I love a bargain, but I learned about using cheap charcoal. So, when I come across sales price on good charcoal I load up and my charcoal costs are about the same or less than the cheap stuff.

I love the char logs even though they do make more ash. I set them vertical in either the PBC basket or in the SnS on my kettle and use a few briquettes to get them started.
