    Kingsford Professional Briquettes

So BF bought some of this charcoal because it was on sale. Y’all, this charcoal burns so fast! I had to stop my cook and refuel my KJ Jr. It’s coming back to temp as I type. My instinct tells me I have another hour or so to go on my spares.

Yeah i bought some KBB specifically for those times I want to grill vs smoke. The B&B lasts so long I was wasting a lot of the charcoal when doing something like a steak. The KBB is SO small and light next to the B&B...

Sheila Ann, I switched to B & B Charcoal Briquettes based on several positive reviews from members here. I also bought some of their char logs to add to the briquettes. I’ve gotten much longer cooks from using them, as well as cleaner smoke. Give B & B a try. I still use Kingsford, but mainly for grilling or shorter cooks. B & B has a LOT of fans here.

Pretty sure Long Beach is well outside the Academy footprint, but Ace Hardware has it or can get it.

I've been finding it in stock at Ace in Chicagoland.

I bought a bunch of the Kingsford Professional on sale at Costco. Definitely not for long cooks. I use it with the Vortex for chicken. B&B for anything longer.

In my experiences, KBB and Pro ain't any different other than start up smell. B&B is the bomb, but I'm not a fan of post oak smell.

Sounds like I'm definitely in the minority here. I've used nothing but Kingsford Professional in my PBC for the last 3 years and I routinely get 10+ hours on a single basket. I did a brisket last weekend that was in the PBC for almost 11 hours and the drum was still at 235 when I took the brisket out.

Then I may have been using too little. The SnS has spoiled me because I find I use less charcoal and can reuse what doesn’t burn off. But with the Pro, I find half of them are gone before I even empty the chimney. Maybe I got a really weird batch?

Kingsford Professional does burn faster, but it's great for chicken cooks. I use it almost exclusively in my PBC for poultry. It's not a bad charcoal, harder to initially light than KBB, but does a good job.

I've never used Pro for long cooks, though. Good to hear that you've had great success with it for that, DennyWoo . I've always got some in my Rubbermaid Tub Charcoal Emporium in the garage.

I tried it once. I don’t remember much other than I didn’t think it was worth the premium price, which is all I need to remember, if you think about it.

Agreed, which makes me wonder how a bag ended up in my garage.
            I don't remember buying it....oh well....another one of life's little mysteries....

I've always encountered it on sale. Costco gets it and I bought a pallet of it from Grocery Outlet years ago. I have one more unopened bag at home.

Yeah, I know. I mean, it burns and produces heat. But I’m not going to use it often enough to get used to it, so I’ll just stick to blue bag.

for faster cooks I use whatever and k-pro is great for that.

. For low and slow I use char logs. They last nearly forever. However I can’t use char logs in my gravity feed because they bridge and get stuck in the hopper, so I use B&B briqs instead.

Calibration tests with no food to characterize settings. All using a level basket of KBB, and subset of that ignited by PBC chimney and lid clamped on immediately. I’m sure things will change with food load, but gives an idea how settings may affect things. Ambient temp was 30-40F. Altitude is sea level. Temperature at cook

I purchased a large amount of the pro and had the same results as SheilaAnn. This stuff burns fast. I don't use it much anymore in the SnS and trying to use it with the Weber 22" Santa Maria attachment is a lot of work. It just burns too fast.
But for hot, quick cooks it is hard to beat. Will keep a few bags on hand in the rotation.

And leaves tons of ash, not my fav.

I bought a ton that stuff. It burns hot so it's good for grilling. But when I smoke in my Kamado I only use lump.
