That's what I do with my wood when using my stick burner. It's more work but man that fire goes perfect when you use preburnt wood. I thought I was the only one here crazy enough to do that. Nice to meet you, fellow crazy person who loves his fire-tending! I don't make charcoal though, only ever had a passing interest. I keep it at preburnt wood.

Wow credit to you both! When I use my stick burner, I just rest wood on top of the firebox, by the time it is needed, it is very hot, sometimes smoking and catches almost instantly.
Almost all of my oak (a few cords) come from the remnants of a wildfire. A co-worker was advised by Cal-Fire to cut everything that had burned on his property because it would go up like a matchstick if a subsequent fire came through his property. He felled the trees with his tractor and I cut. It burns really clean.
"The charred layer on all surfaces ignites and gets to slow-burn the quickest..."
Ever see someone have a hard time getting a candle to light? Like when at a wedding the couple lights a Unity Candle? And you're wondering if the difficulty in getting the d*** thing to light is sign of how the marriage is going to go? You don't want a nice white wick sticking up, you need to light it ahead of time, and blow it out as soon as it's lit. Much easier to get it going the second time.
