    B&B Competition Char-Logs

I have never been the biggest fan of lump charcoal. I use lump for hot and fast searing but for longer cooks, I always found it went from super hot to cool in too short amount of time.

This stuff is a game changer. Its burns very clean and steady hot for a very long time. When I was done cooking the potatoes and wings last night there was probably an hour or more of high heat left in the Vortex. Whereas KBB would have been petering out.

It was also budget friendly at $19.99 for a 21lb bag at an Ace Hardware. I am a total fan of B&B products. Thumbs Up!!

Below is the result using B&B Char-Logs.

Could not agree more, B&B hit the mark with their Char-Logs. Academy was carrying them for around $15 a bag.

Agree, thats good charcoal. I have been mixing the char-logs with briquettes for super long cooks.

I’m a recently converted B&B fan also. They burn cleaner and longer than the KBB. As DTro mentioned, I’ve also been mixing their oak charcoal briquettes with the char logs for long cooks. I recently did a brisket on The Bronco with the B&B briquettes mixed with some char logs. Smoked the brisket for 9 hours and still probably had another couple of hours of unburned B&B leftover.

I’ve never thought to use char logs for hot and fast. I also mix with briquettes for low and slow.

not always the right form factor, but Char logs let me run 27 hours in the PBC. (Click the plot)

When I had my Weber, I used these a lot and couldn’t agree more with all of the above.

I hope our Ace Hardware keeps carrying them. I bought all they had (2 bags) in all the Ace Hardware stores in our area.

At least near me, you can check inventory online and/or order online and pick up at your local Ace store.

Yes I will second Academy. That is where I find my B&B. Lowes was carrying the B&B lump and wood chunks last summer, but cleared it out in the fall, and looks to be carrying junky Cowboy lump again this year.

The only Academy around here you gotta pay tuition. Or police and fire. I’m too old for all of them. Lol.

Just picked up 2 bags at Ace based on recommendations here, as well as from flyingsmoke.com. (he was raving about them)

What ratio Char Logs to briquettes work best for y’all for long cooks?

I just did a cook this past weekend using charlogs for the first time. I used half a dozen in my PBC, and filled in the rest with Cowboy briquettes.
I was pleased with the performance.
Was able to maintain a steady 260ish temp for over 10 hours...

The Naked Whiz (in a 2021 review) gave the char logs an "Average" rating if used in place of lump, and a "Recommended" rating if used in place of briquettes. I'm in the latter camp and will be trying it out for low and slow cooks.

The only drawback is the high ash production, which I deal with anyway. According the the Naked Whiz review, the char logs produce about 7% more ash than any lump charcoal they've ever tested. And they noted slow lighting. But I want to try them anyway.

And the prices at Academy Sports are way lower than the prices at Ace Hardware.

ID:	1205504 I love these char logs. Here’s a pic of how I set them up in the SnS for a low and slow cook. I use KBB to get them started. The only thing I’ve noticed is they seem to make a little more ash than standard briquettes. But I really like how even they burn.

I've not yet tried them for grilling.
pretty easy to light in a chimney?
Filled the chimney the same as with briquettes?

                        Cook looks good btw 👍
