    Electric Smoker Modifications

I have a POS Masterbuilt 40" Electric Smoker that doesn't heat anymore. I replaced the control panel and the element/wire connectors, but it didn't help. Are there any suggestions on how to either try something else to make it work or even some possible modifications I can make so it doesn't completely go to waste? I mean, other than the fact that it doesn't work, it's relatively still in pretty good shape. (Wish I had read the review here before I purchased it.)

I had the heating element go out in an oven. I replaced the oven. Might be in the same boat. Have you contacted Masterbuilt?

Yeah, they at least sent me the heating element and control panel, but when replacing them didn't work they told me I would new to buy a new one.

I gave two of them away about 3-4 yrs ago and glad I did.

My Masterbuilt quit working also, searched online and found this is a common problem. One of the element wires basically burns the connector off in the back. I found some high heat connectors on Amazon and soldered both sides to the new connectors even though obviously only one side was broken. I did this 4 years ago and the unit is still working.

When I first replaced the heating element itself, it still heated just not to a temperature above 150 degrees. When I told Masterbuilt this they then sent me a new control panel and after replacing it it quit heating all together. That's when I went ahead and replaced the connectors, but it still didn't work.

I have seen somewhere, (probably here), that you can buy a kit to add a pellet pooper. That would involve cutting a hole and attaching the kit. It might work for you.

      Edit to add here's one:

Build your own pellet smoker with the Pellet Pro® Elite pellet hopper assembly. 36,000 BTUs of reliable heat for custom and DIY smoker builds.

That link appears to be broken, but when I went straight to the Smoke Daddy site itself I wasn't able to locate a Pellet Pooper. Perhaps it's been discontinued?

It works for me, but here it the name of the kit:

The Pellet Pro® Upgraded Pellet Hopper Assembly

You can search for it on their site.

Sounds like Redwng has the answer. To stay electric you could try adding a new element. Here is a link for an electric conversion that might give you some ideas. http://virtualweberbullet.com/gas-an...nversions.html

Yeah, I found that same element on Amazon and thought that maybe replacing the one Masterbuilt sent me with this one might help, but I'm not sure how I'd get it to produce smoke using the smoker's existing equipment. I guess I'd have to add a pellet tray and controller because I'd probably get tired of the analog temperature controller, too. Great ideas, thanks!

ccweir place a foil or metal pan / pot on top of the heating element and then place wood chips in it.

I have the analog 30" Masterbilt and the element went stopped getting about 200. I replaced it with this:

You could do the same....it's just a simple dial control, but I did a dry run and marked my 225-250 sweet spot with a sharpie and it's dead reliable.
