Returning new electric smoker (Christmas gift) to Lowe's for a Camp Chef Smoke Vault? A good friend gave me a nice electric smoker for Christmas and I was planning to get a gasser from Camp Chef (24'') after January. I was wondering get if I could put charcoal under the wood chips in the same pan, and would it make a smoke ring? The electric only goes up to 275, but it is "self adjustable temp". Any ideas? I hate to take their gift back cause they thought that was the best smoker they could find. I'mean really grateful for the gift, but can I use charcoal in it successfully? Ideas??

That's a sticky question.
If your close friends does not visit your home, I'd say go ahead and return it. If the friends will know that you have returned it, it depends on how good a friend they are. If it's a close friend, then call them and tell them the truth - you were already planning on getting a specific grill and that you are going to return theirs and put that $$ towards what you wanted. They should understand - but I don't know them. You have to decide if you think they will understand. Good luck.
You can use briquettes with the wood chips, but what are you hoping to gain by doing that?

Gas smokers produce better results than electrics and the Smoke Vault 24" is one of our favorites. Perhaps you can thank your generous friend while explaining that you prefer gas and had planned on purchasing a gas smoker. I wouldn't recommend using charcoal in an electric to affect temperature, but if you feel your friend would be too badly hurt by returning the gift, you can try putting one or two briquettes in with the wood to produce some combustion gases. Return it and get what you really want. I never understood why that practice has always been frowned upon. I mean, if I spend $ on a gift for someone I would rather them exchange it for something they will actually use/want than to stick it in the closet just to be "nice" about getting something they don't want.
On another note, I have a Smoke Vault 24" and used it exclusively for almost 2 years as I started getting into smoking. I think you will be glad you shed the shackles of that old gift giving etiquette.

I second this attitude. I got an airfryer for Annual Gift Exchange season from my brother. I'm exchanging it for an InstaPot. I would like to fry more, but feel that I will get a lot more use out of an easier PC.

Roger that JP, but my friend Dave lost his family/job not long ago and my ex (shes a roommate noe..he..he) ran across this kid (we are in our 60s) and I gave him a room upstairs and some of my pants & shirts if he would help me fix up & paint until he got a job. He got a job and is paying us rent. I was showing him some tips on smoking but forgot to mention electric..Last edited by Tomcat; January 9, 2017, 02:05 PM.

Thanks for the advice, yep i watched the youtube video Max did a month or so back. I have decided i am going to keep the electric for fish, shrimp, etc., and buy the smoke vault 24 for my pulled pork butts, briskets ribs etc. Guess i can reheat and keep stuff hot in the elevtric until serving.
