Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

Also please confirm you've read the article on electric smokers. There's only so much that can be done with the technology.

do you live at complex that doesn't allow open flames? (check into pellet smokers GMG and Traeger smoker's are enclosed enough that it appears there are no open flames) I got the GMG just for that reason and it passed inspection when they saw the plug they were happy.

Masterbuilt seems to have improved construction quality a bit. Char-Broil recently introduced their SmartChef electrics that can be monitored from your smart phone. However, even the Cadillac of electric smokers, Cookshack, has the inherent limitations present in all electrics. Here's why we believe smokers that cook with some form of combustion are superior to electrics: http://amazingribs.com/BBQ_buyers_gu...c_smokers.html

Probably not. When you think about it, all electric smokers are pretty much the same assuming you can set the temperature accurately. I have a masterbuilt pro with a digital controller. And I know it is 25 degrees off if I want the temperature to be 225. So I set it to 200 and it's just as good as any other electric model that has a more accurate thermostat. in fact I rely on a known good external digital thermometer and ignore the built in display. Considering I bought it at a deep discount after Christmas (it was returned) I think I did OK. But my next purchase won't be another electric. I'm looking at a pellet or BGE.

A couple of years back I was looking for something that I did not have to babysit constantly adjusting the flame to maintain temperature on. I was impressed that Meathead had awarded the cookshack elite smokette an award so on that basis I bought one. With the base and the cover it cost me around $1,400. After all of that I have to admit I have been pretty disappointed in the flavor of the meat. It seems to taste more like creosote (bitter) than the sweet smoke that I had become accustomed to on either charcoal or gas. I think at the time there were not the abundance of automatic pellet smokers that there are now. Had I to do it over again that is probably the way I would go.
