I just saw on the news that Texas has a High School BBQ competition with thirty teams competing. I am wonder if there are other states have High School BBQ competitions. That kind of early competition should give them a head start if they get into the competition circuit.

This is from 2023 and they say that there’s actually 116 teams statewide and that 92 of them qualified for the championship competition! 😳 Wish this would have been around when I was in high school, I would have quit my knitting classes for this!

In my day even if I suggested something like this at school they would of laughed me out of the room. Great deal for the kids.

Kids where I grew up are too pussified to operate a grill. they do not learn to drive til in their twenties. I was driving, before 16, illegally because it was exciting and gave me the ability to go places. Mommy will chauffer them anywhere they need to go.

I was just thinking while BBQ competition is not athletic, it certainly is less injury prone unless of course if you eat too much BBQ and drink too much alcohol. But that would be on you.

LA Pork Butt it was actually alcohol related, but really was due to a friend of mine, dropping some logs on the fire while I was trying to push in some longer pieces into the middle. I happened to be leaning over, when I probably should have been leaning back! I was left unsupervised for the weekend. Never a good thing.

LA Pork Butt next time I'll tell you about the time I was left unsupervised and melted some of the siding on the house with a chimney starter. That was all entirely on me.

My receptionist said her grandson is on the middle school fishing team. He is also a budding pitmaster and if they have a BBQ team he will definitely join. Wish this stuff was around when I was younger.

BION, there's a high school BBQ circuit in California. A few years ago I was at a craft fair and at one of the booths was a HS teacher who was the BBQ team coach. He was selling several of the kid's BBQ rubs as a fundraiser. They were pretty good and salt free, like we like 'em. They understood the dry brining process.

If you have YouTube TV or HBO Max there is a show called BBQ High that follows several Texas HS BBQ Teams during their season...I enjoyed it.
Melissa Cookston started the World Junior BBQ League for high schoolers to compete in BBQ but I am not sure how active it is... https://www.worldjrbbqleague.com/
I have seen some other high school aged competition options but I cannot think of them right now.
If my local HS has some kind of BBQ program I would happily volunteer to help, even though I am not a BBQ competitor I would hope I could still be of some benefit to a program.

TripleB I am not the best speller or proof reader, but AI has completely changed words using the 1st letter and then spelling a word that is not even close to what I typed. I hate it. It borders on artificial arrogance.
