Someone selling Primo XL in what appears to be good shape for a very good price near me. It would be my first kamado style grill - anything in particular to look for when checking it out?

Green Mountain Grill - Jim Bowie
(I've never regretted having too much grate space).
Weber Genesis Gas grill
Weber Kettle grills x 2
Would make sure the the ceramic is in good condition. Make sure the gaskets are in good shape too.
That said, I love my Primo. It is my go-to for almost everything (except steaks, it's hard to pick between the Primo and the PK). I use the Primo for long and short cooks. It is wonderful and holds temps really well. Can't say enough good things about a Primo.

Mainly, look for cracks in the ceramic and rust in the stand if it comes with one. If the gasket is bad it can be replaced so if the Primo is a really good price I wouldn't worry to much about that. If the price is not so good then I would use that as a negotiating point.

Look for cracks in ceramic and damage to the outside shell. The insides and removable parts are all replaceable but the outer shell integrity has to be good.

It's $500.Originally posted by LA Pork Butt View PostWhen you consider the good price, remember that for a Kamado about half the price is the warranty which are usually not transferable.

If there are no parts that need to be replaced you have a super deal. Put the second $500 in a savings account in cause you need to replace a part in the future. The $1000 dollar total is still a bargain.

Nothing appears to need immediate replacement. I may spend some money to replace some of the part with slight rust (casters, name plate on top) but that's purely vanity and honestly, with how close I am to the ocean, rust is just part of life.

I’m sold on kamados. If it’s not cracked the only other question would be the warranty. I had to use the warranty on my first Kamado Joe 3 times. Every time mine cracked was during a high temp burn out so I’ve learned to keep that below 800 F. My newer KJ has never needed warranty. I don’t think you’ll ever be sorry for getting a Primo.

I bought a Primo XL off of marketplace several years ago. It isn’t pretty. The hinge has some weakness or needs adjusting and I chose to replace the vents with newer models. The table is wobbly, even after I braced it up and turned it into a Frankenstein looking thing. With all that, it just cooks. A lot. For that price, you won’t be sorry.

Grabbed it this morning - she is HEAVY. Guy knew he was giving it up for a song but was moving to a 55 and older community with no charcoal. Gave me tons of accessories, charcoal and some hickory chunks too. Looks to be in excellent condition. Some rust on the casters but we live near the ocean and everything rusts eventually. I still might see about replacing a few pieces to make it look as good as new but the cart and the body itself look perfect.
Possibly an older model as the top vent looks different than some recent videos I have seen. Will post pics when I get the first cook going, hopefully this weekend.

bbq_esq I use briquettes in my PK and use lump in the Primo. I have a dealer near me that carries Jealous Devil products and I will say I really like their products a lot and would recommend them. In the past I used Cowboy Lump, however, I changed to Jealous Devil and really like it a lot and definitely prefer it to the Cowboy I have tried. Prices for me are better too!! :-)

Not in action yet but here she is. Cart is a very nice touch. All hardware in good shape. Might replace those casters and possibly the nameplate if possible but it all rusts here so who cares. Looks like they just have changed the upper damper system at some point so not sure if anyone can date this thing?

For what it is worth in the BGE world, I have had every piece warranty replaced over the last 16years. Not sure about Primo, but BGE will only honor warranty repairs to the original buyer at the original selling store.
That smoker does look sexy AF, well done!
