I’m trying to decide if I should get a charcoal basket for my Broil King Keg 5000. Any suggestions?
Up until now I’ve only filled lump charcoal until right under the air holes. This is usually fine, but on cold/windy winter nights for a long smoke I’ve noticed that I could use a bit more charcoal. Should I just fill charcoal above the air holes and be done with it? Or should I get a charcoal basket to preserve air flow? If I should get a charcoal basket: is there one you recommend?
I cook on a Big Green Egg and I have their charcoal basket which I prefer to the Kick Ash Basket. I only use lump and almost always fill it up to the fire ring whether I am grilling or cooking low and slow. I also have the Kick Ash ash can which is handy after shaking the ash from the basket.
My assumption is that you are looking at something like the Kick Ash Basket. I find it handy for removing the ash without the need to remove the charcoal or constantly stir it to get it to drop through the grate. It speeds up getting ready for the next cook.
Thanks! Yeah Kick Ash is one of the brands that I’ve seen. The BGE with the smaller holes looks interesting too. The easy cleanup sounds good, but I guess my primary goal is to add more lump charcoal and maintain good airflow.
I like the BGE basket because it doesn't drop as many large pieces of charcoal as the Kick Ash Basket. If you don’t care about that and you are after high heat fast for grilling then Kick Ash Basket would be my choice.
Do some checking on line before you buy. Some of those less expensive stainless baskets are a great buy. I have one that I gave 40 something dollars in a kamado and it’s built just as well as my expensive one.
