    Transporting BGE

I hope I didn’t post this in the wrong spot but I was wondering what your thoughts were on taking a BGE somewhere. I have a Large and it’s obviously heavy. I was planning on taking it out of the nest and taking all the guts out it to make it lighter and then transporting in the back of my vehicle. Also wrapping all of the guts in blankets. I’m only going about 10 miles but just a bit nervous about the transport. Any tips would be appreciated.

What sort of stand or table do you have?

I have the composite wood shelves on either side. My blan was to lift them by the frame that holds those up.

I think your plan to separate the guts an wrap in blankets is a good one. I didn’t do that when I moved mine and the plate setter cracked. I created a system of four handles and straps that worked well for two pople moving the egg itself. If you are interested i’ll post some pics.

This pictured immediately changed my mood. I was grief stricken in an instant.

        First thought was "The Horror".
Second thought was - "You know, those things are expensive enough it might be worth putting in a claim on house insurance depending on what happened..."

Keep it vertical during the car/truck ride.

Your plan of removing and wrapping the internal parts is good, I'd ensure that the dome is strapped down as well. If you have it in a nest be careful moving it, pull, don't push. I have a friend that uses two XL for completion and moves them at least once a week, so if you're careful going 10 miles shouldn't be a problem

Rjbachtold Here is a picture of it ready to go. There are two straps (not ratchet) with two handles on each side. Here is the link where I got the idea. https://youtu.be/LSw3hNFyvnM

Threads like this make me think it much less risky and potentially cheaper to go buy a $99 Weber kettle for those occasions you need to go grill somewhere else, versus moving a very heavy and expensive ceramic cooker... That broken cooker in pieces on the ground is just a sad sad sight...

Ya that makes sense, just $99 would end up being getting the SNS because the plan was to do a pork butt.

Rjbachtold I've done many pork butts without the SNS using the "snake method" and a disposable aluminum water/drip pan. You are right that the SNS makes things easier, but not absolutely necessary. I was just pointing out that if it were me I would be worried about breaking the cooker, and maybe something lighter and more portable could be an option.

You’re right. I took the easier and safer way out and just smoked it from the comfort of my own deck and going to reheat it tomorrow.

Hahaha! Funny you ask @Rjbachtold! My large egg has cooked on beaches, in mountains, and on the lake ice fishing!! Since you asked, I had to chart my Eggcelent trips!! 8,322 miles in total has my large egg traveled over the last 10 years!!!
