Replacing gaskets: is it clean enough?

    Good afternoon!
I am working on replacing my lid gaskets. How clean is clean enough?
I have all of the old fuzz off and have scraped and wiped with rubbing alcohol as instructed.

Definitely. Are you spraying the 3M stuff, or is your new gasket pre-stickied? If you’re spraying, tape the edges, I used thick width painter’s tape and newspaper. In either case, just take your time, it isn’t a race.

My original gasket lasted about a season and a half. My replacement gasket has lasted 13+ years.

I went with the BGE replacement kit. So, pre-sticky.

Clean as best as you can, maybe something with grit too. Lots of rubbing alcohol and it will be good to go.

Looks good to me. Try not to stretch the gasket while you are putting it on. And as others have said, take your time.

Good point, I forgot about that!

Perhaps finish up with some wet sandpaper and alcohol. And let it dry.

I’ve got the same concerns but it involves the intake manifold on my 2006 Silverado…

Oak Smoke I am not sure the gaskets on the GMT800 series (1999-2006?) need RTV on the intake gaskets. I've not pulled it off yet, but the replacement set is a rigid plastic frame with rubber gaskets inset for around each intake. It clips to the intake as well with clips. So I think it's just a matter of doing the right torque. My 1996 intake manifold gaskets, having replaced them twice, are cardboard and I applied RTV liberally to both sides.

If we are talking about a V8 or V6 I’m referring to the strip of block that runs across the front and rear of the intake. The seal there’s only job is to keep oil from leaking out. I’ve never used RTV around intake or coolant ports. We used copper coat gasket sealer on those areas. The newer gasket sets with the rubber sealing areas are incredible. Good luck JIm.

Oak Smoke the series GM V8 I'm working on doesn't have that strip across the valley that you are talking about. The valley is open to the elements under the intake manifold, and has two knock sensors mounted, with a cable snaking out from under the intake manifold. Horrible design if you ask me. I'm replacing the sensors.
