The temperatures here in Dallas have been running triple digits for weeks now which started me thinking about solar cooking. My Kamado has been in the sun all day and when I looked at the internal temperature it was 185. That started me thinking about how long could I cook at 225 on one load of charcoal. I am betting at least 3 days. I wish I had a plan for continuous cooking. I don’t think can turn it into solar cooking.

Andrrr the test has begun. The Kamado Joe Jr is fired up and the Smobot is on with a 5.5 # Boston Butt at 7:00am Central Time. I’ll keep you posted. The next step is a finished Butt and then see how long it’s will run. My original thought was let it run without food, so I am not sure it will burn as long with the 40 degree Butt in. It hasn’t been going below 80 degrees overnight here. We will see.

Well, I took the Butt off 40 minutes ago, and following Polarbear777 advice I am chain smoking some chicken tenders. We will see how long that load of charcoal can last.

Andrrr DaveD Polarbear777 Here are the results. The temps began dropping just before 6am Central time and haven’t been able to return to 225. That is just about 23 hours on one load of charcoal. I cooked the Boston Butt for 23 hours and cooked some chicken for another hour. I have no idea how much of burn time was lost cooking and opening the dome, but without the food cooking I am guessing I could have gotten another two hours out of the load. I was lazy and didn’t follow the Elder Ward method of stacking large followed by medium and small. I just threw in some medium. I think the Elder Ward method might have gotten me another hour or two. I am not sure the ambient outside temperature was much of a factor.
On a side note I once bought some lump charcoal on close out and did a test run without food following the Elder Ward method in my large Big Green Egg. As difficult as it may be to believe it ran for 72 hours.
I am not sure what any of this proves other than on Kamados can do a 20 hour plus cook without adding charcoal. Thanks for tuning in, and I really liked the chain smoking idea. I’m making plans.
