Question about BGE outer surface temp

Hey, all - I have a friend who asked me this question: With all the insulating properties of the BGE, could the outer surface be relatively cool to the touch? He has a daughter with autism and is concerned about making dad's BBQ area as safe as possible. While a Kamado is already interesting to him, this would make it far more so.

My guess is that it would still be very hot when cooking, but since I don't own one myself I thought I would ask all the egg owners what they think. I suppose this question would also apply to the SnS Kamado as I know he's looking at that one as well.

    Cheers

I thought as much. It's ceramic after all. Thanks for the quick reply!

Yep, just like any smoker or grill as soon as it heats up up she is hot for sure.

Yes, my egg gets hot, but I think unlike a metal cooker where you could burn yourself with the touch you would have to hold your hand on it to get burned. It is the dome that gets the hottest because of the principle of rising heat.

It isn’t “relatively cool to the touch”, but you can touch it while it’s on a low/slow, like hold your hand on it for a second or so. On the hot stuff, while grilling, no.

Haha, I love doing that on slow cooks in the winter. Makes my hands feel great in the cold weather.

The only kamados I'm aware of that pretty much remain cool to the touch are the Komodo Kamado cookers. They're a bit $pendy tho.

If you want a well insulated cooker, you might look into this @ https://grovengrill.com/ . They are alittle pricey, but built like a tank.
