Hey, all - I have a friend who asked me this question: With all the insulating properties of the BGE, could the outer surface be relatively cool to the touch? He has a daughter with autism and is concerned about making dad's BBQ area as safe as possible. While a Kamado is already interesting to him, this would make it far more so.
My guess is that it would still be very hot when cooking, but since I don't own one myself I thought I would ask all the egg owners what they think. I suppose this question would also apply to the SnS Kamado as I know he's looking at that one as well.

I had a Big Steel Keg for a bout 13 years. It never got too hot to the touch anytime I used it until the last couple of years of its life! Insulation must have deteriorated. I wouldn't hesitate to recomend it. I now own a PK360 . It gets Hot!
I got my Broil King Keg about 10 years ago. It served me pretty well and really got me into Kamado style cooking. Then the bottom rusted out almost completely after 4 years. I could no longer seal it tight around the bottom damper and so I scrapped it. It sat in the back yard, all alone for years. Until this year, when we
Yes, my egg gets hot, but I think unlike a metal cooker where you could burn yourself with the touch you would have to hold your hand on it to get burned. It is the dome that gets the hottest because of the principle of rising heat.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
It isn’t “relatively cool to the touch”, but you can touch it while it’s on a low/slow, like hold your hand on it for a second or so. On the hot stuff, while grilling, no.
