You have to drill five holes - the center hole for the bolt at 3/8" and the vent holes at 1". Get yourself a step drill bit and it's fairly easy. Took me about 30 minutes, but that was doing it in 100 degree heat so I took a few breaks to get out of the sun. I used masking tape to tape the template down, but like I said, either the template was off or my bit moved some so the holes were not quite lined up with the vent.
I'd also get some metal files to file down the edges. The drill bit will leave curls and sharp edges. Nice to clean them off.
I did not use high heat paint to seal the holes. I didn't want the paint flaking off or dripping on my food. I did a rib cook right after installing the vent so my guess is that the smoke and grease will seal the exposed steel.
