Pit Barrel Cooker - Now In Stores?

Howdy all - I may be late to the party here, but I’ve noticed that Pit Barrel Cookers are now being sold in the Ace Hardwares in my area (KC MO). No price savings to be had ($300 in the stores, same as if you order one online since they don’t charge for shipping)... but I thought I’d let folks know in case there are members who have been hesitating in purchasing one sight unseen.

Now you can go see them, touch them and play with them to help with your decision. Ace Hardware also is carrying Pit Barrel accessories (hinged grill grates, turkey hangers, their signature seasonings, etc) so you can check those out too.

I really love my PBC, but agonized over the purchase years ago since they didn’t have them in stores near me... despite the great reviews, I dislike making purchases of products I haven’t seen firsthand. Now you don’t have to. :-)

    Happy Shopping!

Here too Mr. Bones - passed by only about three miles from our house. We were very fortunate... sadly, a whole lot of folks in our area were not.

I have seen them around too! Nothing like being able to physically see what you are buying before you buy.

Amen! Had that option been available to me I probably would have acquired mine at least a year earlier. Think about that opportunity-cost/loss with that delay? It's staggering and tragic.

There is a grill store locally that carries them. A couple weeks ago they had a big demo day with some Traegers, BGEs, PBCs, and a few others. Was awesome seeing it hands on and being used to cooksime different foods. And they were selling them for $199. Still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger.

That’s a heartbreaker brother, as I’ve NEVER seen them on sale anywhere. If you’re that lucky again, pounce - believe me, you won’t be disappointed.

So now it appears that those without a PBC may have an Ace up their sleeves.

Our local hardware changed from True Value to Ace within the past year and I've noticed a huge improvement in their grilling department. I haven't seen a PBC yet, but they have B&B briquettes (I like them better than Kingsford) which I used to have to mail order and a much bigger selection of Weber accessories.

Interesting news for sure. Our local Ace has always been a great resource for anything Weber so maybe we'll see the PBC line too.

My uncle, west of Linwood, was not so lucky.

Captain Mike, I hope his uncle and family are ok, too. BUT, i have to ask it. Were you referring to his family or Mr. Bones's skivvies!

No one was injured. Under that rubble is a basement that protected them. The house was totaled by the insurance adjuster. No cattle were lost. All of their barns were damaged but not blown away.

I have noticed that PB accessories are sometimes cheaper on the Ace website. Shipping to a local store is free.

The price of add one at the PBC site seems generally excessive and I am exploring other options. Can’t believe that the ash catcher, a round piece of metal with 3 flanges should cost over 30 bucks or that skewers should cost almost 7 dollars apiece.

perhaps others have found functional alternatives for the PBC site offerings....

I will check them out. Just received my PBC. Did find a barrel cover for $13 and the hinged grate for $17. I saw the hook tool for the same price at Ace.

Will start cooking when it stops raining

The ash catcher is handy, but it's not really a necessity. You can just use a couple sheets of foil, just don't block the intake. The skewers are nice and substantial, did not feel them to be overpriced at all. Most of the baskets can be hacked out of generic BBQ aisle stuff. Even the flippy grate can be hacked with a Weber grate and an angle grinder.

Instead of going with the Pit Barrel ash catcher, I used a round metal pizza pan slightly larger than the charcoal basket and some lightweight chain attached at three points around the edge of the pan. Cheap, simple, and works pretty well as long as you pull the pan out carefully from the PBC.

We have a local open year round farmers market called Lulu's that carries the PBC, all the accessories, pellet smokers, BGE and all accessories, the gateway drum, and even SRF meat. Coming soon will be fresh from the ground veggies.
