My PBC temps have been all over the place. I had to keep stuffing aluminum foil around the rebar, putting bricks on top, fooling with the air vent. I'm a bit of a tinkerer and finally I just put the binder clips from my Weber Kettle on the top and reached into my plumbing department (I"m a plumber) to find 1/2" rubber cone washers we used to use on supply tubing (from shut off to faucet/toilet/etc). They fit the rebar perfectly and can be adjusted all the way open by pulling on one side of the rebar or just moving them to allow a crack of air to move through. They are cheap, maybe $0.15 or even $.25 now, and when and if they get toasted just slide on another. A short 1/2" bolt slipped into the washer will snuff out the fire. No more pieces of aluminum foil littering my yard weeks after I cleaned up!
Also I tried the aluminum foil under the ash catcher but seemed like too much work, I'm so lazy. I took a scrap of sheet metal, held it on the top edge of the barrel and traced the curve. Then I cut it out with a pair of tin snips. The curved edge picks up ash right next to the barrel side and the flat side scrapes the ash off the floor. It also scrapes up any grease. As an added bonus the radius of the the pit barrel matches the bottom of my Weber kettle.
I love the additional shelf idea and that will soon follow. Thanks to everyone for your great ideas and input.

I suggest that you get a felt gasket for the top and you should be fine.

Yes. Like the Lava lock. Go for it....

I don't have that in my Traeger, so far.
Air to feed the fire will not enter with no airflow.

My PBC has lots of mods.

But i think the single most useful thing I've done is screw metal eye into the handle of my spatula to always have an easy tool to grab the hooks.
